[Setting: County General Hospital-Chicago]

{WALKING IN THROUGH THE MAIN DOORS, THE CAMERA ZOOMS IN ON CARTER GREETING THE PARAMEDIC WITH A PATIENT COVERED IN BLOOD}

JOHN CARTER:
What do we have?

PARAMEDIC:
15 year old male, GSW to the left chest. BP 70 over 120. Unstable. Seizing on way here. Shots of stability.

JOHN CARTER:
Start IV drip, 2 milligrams morphine. Get me some O neg, we got a bleeder. Obvious internal bleeding, call the OR we're sending him up, ASAP.

NURSE:
You can't. He's not stable.

JOHN CARTER:
We need more blood.

ABBY LOCKHART:
I'll call the blood bank.

JOHN CARTER:
Go head, hurry up.

NURSE:
Heart rate dropping. He's going flat line. No pulse

JOHN CARTER:
Start CPR, bag him, and get Pratt.

ABBY LOCKHART:
You need to crack him.

JOHN CARTER:
If I crack him, he'll bleed in.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Well do something, he needs an airway.

JOHN CARTER:
Intubation tray now!

ABBY LOCKHART:
It's not going to work.

JOHN CARTER:
It has to.

{JOHN, ABBY AND THE NURSES WORK ON THE PATIENT.}
[35 MINUTES LATER...]

JOHN CARTER:
Code, he's dead. Time of death: 9:47.

PRATT:
You should have cracked him.

JOHN CARTER:
Don't you understand? He would have bled in, and died even faster.You should have known that by now. You are a doctor.

PRATT:
Or you could continue to teach me.

JOHN CARTER:
I don't have time. Let's go.

{PRATT LEAVES THE TRAUMA ROOM THROUGH THE SWING DOORS. HE HAS A VERY PISSED OFF EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE WHILE HE TAKES OFF HIS SCRUBS THAT ARE COVERED IN BLOOD.}

{CARTER AND ABBY BEGIN TO CLEAN UP THE USED SUPPLIES}

ABBY LOCKHART:
You don't have to be so hard on him.

JOHN CARTER:
Yes I do. The kid needs to learn respect and discipline.

ABBY LOCKHART:
He's young...

JOHN CARTER:
...and stupid.

{CARTER DROPS THE USED SUPPLIES INTO THE GARBAGE CAN, PULLS OFF HIS SCRUBS AND GLOVES. HE LOOKS AGGRAVATED, BUT TIRED.}

{LUKA KOVAC WALKS IN}

LUKA KOVAC:
What's wrong with him?

ABBY LOCKHART:
I don't know. He's been like this for weeks.

LUKA KOVAC:
Something wrong between you two?

ABBY LOCKHART:
No, at least I don't think so. I better go check what's going on with him.

{ABBY BEGINS TO PULL OFF GLOVES AND WALK OUT}

LUKA KOVAC:
Abby?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Yes?

LUKA KOVAC:
(pointing to body)
He's dead?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Yeah. I called the morgue, but their behind.

{ABBY TURNS AROUND TO WALK OUT}

LUKA KOVAC:
Abby?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Yeah?

LUKA KOVAC:
You know I'm always there if you need to talk.

{ABBY FORCES A SMALL SMILE AS SHE GOES THROUGH THE DOOR. ABBY WALKS THROUGH THE ER AND GETS HOUNDED BY PATIENTS COMPLAINING OF PAIN AND NOT GETTING ANY SERVICE OR ATTENTION. ABBY GETS THROUGH TO THE FRONT DOORS, AND SEES CARTER'S NOT OUTSIDE. SHE GOES TO THE DESK, AND STARTS LOOKING AROUND. ABBY THEN NOTICES THAT CARTER'S NAME IS OFF THE PATIENT ADMISSIONS BOARD, HIS CHARTS HAVE BEEN TURNED IN, AND HIS COAT'S MISSING FROM IT'S USUAL SPOT BELOW THE DESK.}

JERRY:
Looking for Carter?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Yes, actually. Where is he?

JERRY:
He went home. He said he wasn't feeling well.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Do you know why he didn't tell me?

JERRY:
Beats me.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Thanks. Say Jerry, can you do me a favor?

JERRY:
Sure.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Tell who-ever's in charge that I'm on break and I'll be back soon.

JERRY:
Consider it done.

{ABBY RUSHES OUT OF THE ER, PUTTING HER JACKET ON. THE AIR IS CHILLY, AND SHE'S RUSHING THROUGH THE STREETS. SOMETHING IS WRONG, AND SHE CAN FEEL IT. HER BODY STARTS GOING INTO A PANIC. FINALLY SHE REACHES CARTER'S APARTMENT. SHE WALKS UP THE STAIRS AND KNOCKS ON THE DOOR TWICE. NO ANSWER. SHE LEANS DOWN AND PULLS OUT THE KEY FROM UNDER THE DOORMAT. SHE OPENS THE DOOR, THEN DROPS THE KEY IN SURPRISE AND SHOCK.}
{CARTER IS SITTING ON THE SOFA WITH A NEEDLE, INJECTING HIMSELF WITH MORPHINE. THE EMPTY BOTTLE IS ON THE STAND NEXT TO HIM.}

ABBY LOCKHART:
Carter...

JOHN CARTER:
Go back to work. They need you.

ABBY LOCKHART:
{ENTERING CARTER'S APARTMENT AND SITTING NEXT TO HIM}
I can't. What's wrong with you? All the while you've been lying to me. How could you? You have a problem and you need to deal with it. You can, we can, work through it.

JOHN CARTER:
I don't have a problem.

ABBY LOCKHART:
{LOOKING AT CARTER}
Yeah you do.

JOHN CARTER:
{LOOKS AWAY}
No I don't.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Carter, I love you, now listen to me.

JOHN CARTER:
I won't. Just shut up and leave me alone.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Look at yourself! Is this the John Carter I came to know and love?

JOHN CARTER:
Leave Abby.

ABBY LOCKHART:
I can't, and I won't.

{ABBY AND CARTER'S VOICES BECOME LOUDER AND LOUDER UNTIL CARTER GETS REALLY MAD AND SLAPS ABBY ACROSS HER FACE. THEN HE REALIZES WHAT HE DID, AND BREAKS DOWN CRYING ON THE FLOOR.}

JOHN CARTER:
{SOBBING}
I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.

ABBY LOCKHART:
It's okay. Everything's going to be okay.

{ABBY SLOWLY MUTTERS THOSE COMFORTING WORDS AS SHE HOLD CARTER CLOSE TO HER IN HER ARMS. ABBY HAS A REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE LOOK ON HER FACE AS THE SCENE FADES OUT}

That girl needs to learn how to grow up and act mature.

JERRY:
Have you seen...

ELIZABETH CORDAY:
{CUTTING OFF JERRY}
Kerry, I need her to cover for me.

JERRY:
Bad idea, she wasn't too thrilled about letting Carter go, and we're way behind today.

ELIZABETH CORDAY:
Did I ask for your comments? Just get her on the phone.

{JERRY PICKS UP THE PHONE AND STARTS TO DIAL. ELIZABETH SEES LUKA KOVAC AND DEB CHEN WALKING TOWARDS THE FRONT DESK. JERRY SEES HER LOOK AT THEM. ELIZABETH THEN GRABS THE PHONE OUT OF JERRY'S HAND AND SLAMS IT DOWN.}

DEB CHEN:
Sure, take your time.

ELIZABETH CORDAY:
I plan to be back before Kerry's out of surgery and realizes I'm gone.

LUKA KOVAC:
What did she do this time?

ELIZABETH CORDAY:
I'm not positive, and I don't want to be, but I'm presuming drugs, like last time. Got to run. Thanks tons.

I'm saving her face.

KERRY WEAVER:
Don't question my authority.

ROBERT ROMANO:
I will.

KERRY WEAVER:

Are you sure?

ABBY LOCKHART:
{SNIFFLING AND CRYING}
Yes. After the incident last month, they gave him a shot of it every couple hours for the pain. I've noticed we've been missing some bottles, but I just thought the nurses forgot to write it down. Then today, when I went by his house... I'm sorry...

LUKA KOVAC:
It's okay. Shhh.

ABBY LOCKHART:
I saw him with the bottle and needle.

LUKA KOVAC:
He needs treatment.

ABBY LOCKHART:
He won't take it.

LUKA KOVAC:
He's killing himself.

ABBY LOCKHART:
{LOOKING UP AT LUKA}
Luka?

LUKA KOVAC:
Yeah?

ABBY LOCKHART:
{PULLING HERSELF TOGETHER}
Please don't tell anyone about this. I need time to figure everything

[ IN KERRY WEAVER'S OFFICE, ROBERT ROMANO AND WEAVER ARE AT EACH OTHER'S THROATS, ARGUING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER IN SURGERY.]

KERRY WEAVER:
How dare you question my authority?

ROBERT ROMANO:
I thought it was appropriate, and it was.

KERRY WEAVER:
If anything went wrong in that room, it would have been me who gets the downfall. You never, and I mean never, tell me what to do, or how to do my job.

ROBERT ROMANO:
Then don't, damn it, tell me how to do mine. She was my patient.

KERRY WEAVER:
I realize that but...

ROBERT ROMANO:
{INTERRUPTING KERRY WEAVER}
But you interrupted my surgery, operated on my patient without my consent, and forced me out of my authorized surgery. I will not be treated like shit.

KERRY WEAVER:
Then don't act like it.

{ROMANO GETS UP AND LEAVES KERRY WEAVER'S OFFICE. A VERY PISSED
OFF EXPRESSION IS ON HIS FACE. }

{BACK AT THE ER, SUSAN IS GETTING READY TO LEAVE}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Goodnight.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Finally out of the hell hole?

SUSAN LEWIS:
{LAUGHING}
Yeah, and then I'm going to bed.

LUKA KOVAC:
Lucky. Good night Sleeping Beauty.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Well thank you. I never knew I was a princess.

{SUSAN LEWIS AND LUKA KOVAC SHARE A LAUGH}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Well see you tomorrow.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Night Susan.

{SUSAN GRABS HER PURSE, KEYS, AND LEAVES THROUGH THE DOOR
WHILE PUTTING ON HER COAT}

{LUKA AND ABBY WATCH SUSAN LEAVE THROUGH THE DOORS}

ABBY LOCKHART:
Now who's the chick magnet?

LUKA KOVAC:
{LAUGHS}
We're just friends

ABBY LOCKHART:
That's exactly what Carter and I had said.

LUKA KOVAC:
Well, we all knew about the illicit affair you and Carter had
back in your med-school days.

ABBY LOCKHART:
You did, did you?

LUKA KOVAC:
Too obvious.

{BOTH LAUGH}

{ABBY STARTS LEAVING TO GET HER COAT AND PURSE FROM HER LOCKER}

LUKA KOVAC:
Abby?

ABBY LOCKHART
Yeah?

LUKA KOVAC:
Are you going to go see Carter?

ABBY LOCKHART:
He needs help, or support. I'm going to try to convince him to get help.

LUKA KOVAC:
Want me to go with you?

ABBY LOCKHART:
No, I'll be fine alone.

{ABBY TURNS AROUND AND GOES INTO THE LOUNGE, GRABS HER CLOTHES, COAT, AND PURSE. SHE CHANGES, AND GETS READY TO LEAVE.}

LUKA KOVAC:
Good luck.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Thanks.

{ABBY FORCES A SMALL SMILE AS SHE PUTS ON HER COAT AND HEADS OUT THE ER DOORS INTO THE DARK, CHILLY NIGHT. SHE WALKS THROUGH THE CHICAGO STREETS, THINKING ABOUT CARTER AND HER LIFE. THEN SOME GUY GRABS HER FROM THE BACK AND STARTLES HER.}

GUY:
Shannon?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Uhhh, No.

GUY:
I'm sorry.

ABBY LOCKHART:
{UNDER HER BREATH}
God, are there some weirdo's in this city.

{ABBY FINALLY REACHES CARTER'S APARTMENT, GOES UP THE STAIRS,
AND KNOCKS ON CARTER'S DOOR. }

JOHN CARTER:
Who is it?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Abby. I'm worried about you.

{JOHN CARTER GETS UP AND OPENS THE DOOR WITH BLOOD SHOT EYES,
A PALE FACE, AND A VERY TIRED AND WEAK ATTITUDE.}

{ABBY STARTS WALKING IN AND HELPS CARTER BACK TO THE SOFA}

ABBY LOCKHART:
Carter, you look terrible.

JOHN CARTER:
I feel fine.

ABBY LOCKHART:
No you don't.

JOHN CARTER:
I'm fine, really. I just haven't been able to sleep.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Please, John, come with me to the ER, your going to die if you don't.

JOHN CARTER:
Hell Abby, stop making such a big deal out of nothing.

ABBY LOCKHART:
{SOBBING AND PISSED OFF}
I love you John, but if you choose to go six feet under then go fucking head.
I don't want to deal with your line of bullshit anymore.

{ABBY LEAVES THROUGH THE OPEN BACK DOOR, AND LEAVES CARTER SITTING ON THE SOFA STUNNED. SHE GOES THROUGH THE ALLEY AND SITS DOWN IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING ON THE STAIRS. SHE STARTS CRYING EVEN HARDER, AND SHAKING. SHE WAITS A BIT, THINKING THAT CARTER WILL COME AFTER HER, BUT HE NEVER DOES.}

{AFTER HALF AN HOUR, THE GUY THAT ABBY HAD MET EARLIER CAME BY
AND SAT DOWN NEXT TO HER. SHE IS TOO SAD TO TELL HIM TO LEAVE.}

GUY:
What's wrong?

ABBY LOCKHART:
Nothing. Get away.

GUY:
I just thought you looked like you would want to talk.

ABBY LOCKHART:
No, I'm fine.

GUY:don't look fine.

ABBY LOCKHART:
Leave me alone.

GUY:
Sorry, I can't. I'm involved.

{THE GUY PUTS HIS HAND AROUND THE CRYING ABBY AND TIGHTENS HIS GRIP AROUND HER. ABBY STARTS TYING TO SHAKE HIM OFF, BUT WHEN HE CAN'T, SHE STARTS TO PANIC.}

ABBY LOCKHART:
Get the hell away from me.

GUY:
Sorry, I can't. Like I said, I'm involved.

ABBY:
{SCREAMS}

PATIENT:
Your too good.

{THE CARD GAME IS INTERRUPTED BY THE RADIO AND THE PARAMEDICS.}

PARAMEDIC:
{OVER RADIO}
We got a female coming in, early thirties, unconscious, pretty bruised up.

{TO PATIENT}
Sorry, I'm on duty.

LUKA KOVAC:
{TO PATIENT}
And no cheating...

{LUKA TURNS AROUND AND WALKS OUT THE DOORS WAITING FOR THE AMBULANCE TO ARRIVE.}
{THE AMBULANCE FINALLY SHOWS UP AND LUKA ASSISTS THE PARAMEDICS
TO GET THE PATIENT INTO A TRAUMA ROOM.}

PARAMEDIC:
We found her in an alley. A stranger had the decency to dial for help.

LUKA KOVAC:
Is she stable?

PARAMEDIC:
For the time being.

LUKA KOVAC:
Okay I'm going to get 2 pints of blood. Start to push fluids.

{LUKA RUNS AND GETS TWO PINTS OF BLOOD AND SOME ASSISTANCE.
HE GETS BACK AND WALKS INTO THE TRAUMA ROOM.}

LUKA KOVAC:
{TO NURSE}
What's her BP?

{ THEN KOVAC LOOKS CLOSELY AT HIS NEWEST PATIENT. HE STOPS
DEAD IN HIS TRACKS, AND REALIZES WHO IT IS.}

LUKA KOVAC:
{SHOCKED}

NURSE:
She's going into cardiac arrest. Luka do something.

LUKA KOVAC:

HER ARMS. SHE ROCKS BACK AND FORTH WITH HIM, TRYING TO COMFORT HIM.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Luka you need to lie down.

LUKA KOVAC:
I can't.

SUSAN LEWIS:
I promise to call you if anything changes.

LUKA KOVAC:
I'll stay here.

SUSAN LEWIS:
{GIVING UP}
Okay.

{THE CAMERA THEN ZOOMS TO THE FRONT DOORS AND CARTER WALKING
IN. CARTER FEELS LIKE EVERYONE IS LOOKING AT HIM FUNNY.}

JOHN CARTER:
Hey Jerry, what do we have today?

{AT THE SAME TIME, KOVAC WALKS OUT OF ABBY'S ROOM,
AND SEES CARTER STANDING THERE, TAKING OFF HIS COAT.}

{CARTER THEN SEES LUKA KOVAC START RUNNING TOWARDS HIM. LUKA LOOKS MAD AND WORRIED. HE ALSO LOOKS LIKE HE HAS BEEN CRYING FOR A WHILE.}

LUKA KOVAC:
You son of a bitch, Carter.
{CARTER STANDS THERE WITH A WEIRD EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE.}

LUKA KOVAC:
{STILL COMING TOWARDS CARTER}
You son of a bitch.

{KOVAC PUNCHES CARTER, WHO GOES FLYING TO THE FLOOR. KOVAC CLIMBS ON TOP OF CARTER AND KEEPS ON PUNCHING HIM UNTIL CARTER GIVES UP FIGHTING. ROBERT ROMANO, SUSAN LEWIS, AND JERRY MANAGE TO PULL LUKA OFF AND CALM HIM DOWN.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Luka, go. I'll be right there.

{LUKA GETS UP, AND SLOWLY GOES BACK TO ABBY'S ROOM.}

{SUSAN THEN LEANS OVER TO CARTER, AND CHECKS HIS FACE FOR INJURIES.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Here, let me see...

JOHN CARTER:
Ouch.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Send him for x-ray's. We got a few broken bones.

{A NURSE RUNS TO SUSAN}

NURSE:
Abby's crashing.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Let's go.

JOHN CARTER:
Abby?

CHEN:
Pratt, come on. Let's move.

{THE DOCTORS (EXCLUDING CARTER) RUSH INTO THE
ROOM. ABBY'S STATS ARE LOW, AND HER HEART IS FAILING.}

LUKA KOVAC:
Charge at 250. Clear.

{CHARGES THE BODY}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Nothing.

LUKA KOVAC:
275. Clear.

{CHARGES THE BODY}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Nothing.

LUKA KOVAC:
300. Clear.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Luka, she's gone.

LUKA KOVAC:
I'm not giving up.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Charge at 300. Clear.

{SUSAN CHARGES THE BODY}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Nothing. Luka she's gone.

LUKA KOVAC:
Charge at 300 again.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Time of death: 8:47

LUKA KOVAC:
Susan, you can't.

SUSAN LEWIS:
I'm sorry Luka, you tried.

{LUKA REFUSES TO STOP, UNTIL HE DOES FROM PAIN
AND EXHAUSTION. HE WALKS OUT WITH ONE WORD-"ABBY."}

{EVERYONE WALKS OUT OF THE ROOM CRYING. KOVAC STARTS WALKING TOWARDS THE FRONT DESK, WHEN CARTER WALKS PAST HIM.}

LUKA KOVAC:
Your going to pay.

JOHN CARTER:
For what? What the hell did I do?

LUKA KOVAC:
Room 204

{KOVAC WALKS OFF WHILE CARTER WALKS OVER TO ROOM 204. HE SEES A BATTERED AND BRUISED BODY, THEN REALIZES IT'S ABBY. HE LOOKS UP AT THE MONITORS AND SEES THAT THEY ARE OFF. THEN HE SEES SHE'S NOT BREATHING. SHE'S DEAD. HE STARTS CRYING.}

{SUSAN COMES BY AND SEES CARTER. SHE PUTS HER HAND
ON HIS SHOULDER AND TRIES TO CALM HIM DOWN.}

JOHN CARTER:
Abby, my Abby.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Carter, I'm so sorry.

JOHN CARTER:
{CRYING}
It's all my fault she's dead.

SUSAN LEWIS:
No it's not Carter.

JOHN CARTER:
{CRYING EVEN HARDER}
She loves me so much, but I hurt her so badly.

{SUSAN IS AT A LOSS FOR WORDS. CARTER STARTS WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS. SUSAN WATCHES CARTER WALK THROUGH THE DOORS, LOOKING DEPRESSED AND GRIEF-STRICKEN.}
{CARTER WALKS THROUGH THE STREETS OF CHICAGO, UNTIL HE REACHES THE BEACH. THE WEATHER IS STORMY AND GREY. HE GETS TO THE EDGE AND LOOKS OVER. THERE IN THE WATER, HE BELIEVES HE SEES ABBY'S FACE. HE STARTS THINKING ABOUT HOW HE CAN LIVE WITHOUT ABBY, AND DECIDES HE CAN'T. HE LOOKS OVER TO THE EDGE AND IS ABOUT TO JUMP WHEN...}

{KOVAC SEES CARTER STANDING ON THE EDGE OF HE PIER. HE WALKS CLOSER AND HEARS WHAT CARTER IS SAYING.}

JOHN CARTER:
{TO THE WATER}
Abby, I love you, and I'm sorry.

LUKA KOVAC:
Carter, don't jump.

JOHN CARTER:
Why shouldn't I?

LUKA KOVAC:
Your a good person and a great doctor. What happened to Abby wasn't because of you.

JOHN CARTER:
Yes it was.

LUKA KOVAC:
Abby loved you more than anything, but you let her go. I loved Abby more than anything and I let her go. After my wife and children died, I lost all hope. Abby helped me continue my life. She showed me what love was like. I just never showed it back to her.

JOHN CARTER:
She was my world, my sun, moon, and stars, and I let her go.

LUKA KOVAC:
But you can't blame yourself.

JOHN CARTER:
It was when she came to see me, and I let her leave.

{LUKA STARTS TURNING AROUND TO GO BACK TO THE ER}

LUKA KOVAC:
Come on Carter, let's go.

JOHN CARTER:
I can't.

LUKA KOVAC:
Yes, you can.

JOHN CARTER:
I need time alone.

LUKA KOVAC:
Go home and rest.

{KOVAC TURNS AROUND AND STARTS WALKING, BUT TURNS AROUND
AND LOOKS BACK AT CARTER. CARTER IS LOOKING OUT AT THE HORIZON,
AND THE SUN COMING OUT. THE SCENE THEN FADES OUT.}

[BACK AT THE ER, EVERYONE IS GRIEVING ABBY'S DEATH. THEIR SITTING AROUND THE FRONT DESK AND JUST TALKING AND CRYING. THEIR TRYING TO PULL THEIR LIVES BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.]

SUSAN LEWIS:
I can't believe, she's gone...

PRATT:
Neither can I. How could something like that happen to her?

CHEN:
I don't know. I really don't know.

{LUKA WALKS IN AND HEADS OVER TO THE GROUP.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Is John okay?

LUKA KOVAC:
I guess. I told him to go home.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Thanks.

LUKA KOVAC:
I still say it's his fault.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Shut up.

{CAMERA ZOOMS TO CARTER WALKING UP THE STAIRS TO HIS APARTMENT,
STILL CRYING. HE KEEPS ON THINKING ABOUT WHAT KOVAC HAD SAID.}

JOHN CARTER:
{TALKING TO HIMSELF}
He's right. She's dead, and it's all my fault.

{CARTER OPENS HIS DOOR, AND SEES ABBY'S CLOTHES ALL OVER HIS APARTMENT.}

JOHN CARTER:
{TO HIMSELF}
I can't live without her.

{CARTER WALKS INTO THE KITCHEN AND GRABS A KNIFE. ITS BLADE GLISTENS IN THE RISING SUN. HE RUNS LINES ACROSS HIS WRISTS, AND FIND THE PERFECT PLACE. THEN HE STARTS TO PUSH IN, AND CUT, SLOWLY BUT STEADILY THE BLOOD BEGINS TO FLOW. THE SCENE FADES OUT.}

[THE CAMERA ZOOMS BACK TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE KERRY WEAVER AND ROBERT ROMANO ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO APPROACH ABBY'S DEATH.]

KERRY WEAVER:
So what should we do?

ROBERT ROMANO:
Just sit and wait.

KERRY WEAVER:
Why?

ROBERT ROMANO:
It will all run it's course.

KERRY WEAVER:
I still can't believe it. I saw her only a few hours ago.

{KERRY COLLAPSES ON THE COUCH IN HER OFFICE.}

ROBERT ROMANO:
Neither can I.

{ROMANO GOES AND SITS NEXT TO KERRY. HE PUTS HIS HAND
AROUND HER, AND LETS HER CRY IN HIS ARMS.}

KERRY WEAVER:
I'm sorry about earlier.

ROBERT ROMANO:
So am I.

{KERRY BEGINS TO CRY EVEN HARDER.}

ROBERT ROMANO:
Shhh.. It's okay.

{KERRY LOOKS UP AT ROMANO AND THEIR EYES LOCK. THEY MOVE IN TO SHARE A DEEP PASSIONATE KISS WHILE THE SCENE FADES OUT.}

~*~

[BACK AT THE FRONT DESK SUSAN IS WORRYING ABOUT CARTER. HE'S NOT ANSWERING HIS PHONE OR PAGER.

SUSAN LEWIS:
I'm worried about Carter.

LUKA KOVAC:
He's probably still at the beach.

SUSAN LEWIS:
No, I think he's home. Female intuition, don't ask. I'm going to check up on him.

LUKA KOVAC:
It's pretty calm around here, so go ahead.

{SUSAN GRABS HER PURSE AND COAT AND EXITS THROUGH THE DOORS. SHE STARTS WALKING TOWARD CARTER'S HOUSE, BUT THEN BREAKS INTO A STEADY JOG, THEN A FAST PACE RUN. SHE GETS TO HIS APARTMENT AND RUNS UP THE STAIRS. SUSAN KNOCKS ON THE DOOR. NO ANSWER. SHE LEANS DOWN AND GRABS THE KEY FROM UNDER THE DOORMAT AND OPENS THE DOOR.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Carter, you home? It's me Suzie. Carter, where are you?

SUSAN LEWIS:
{RUNNING TO CARTER'S SIDE}
Oh my God, Carter!

{SUSAN BEGINS TO CRY}

JOHN CARTER:
{GASPING FOR AIR}
I'm sorry.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Shhh... Don't talk.

{SUSAN GRABS THE PHONE AND DIALS FOR AN AMBULANCE.}

JOHN CARTER:
{Gasping}
Suzie, I don't' want to die...

SUSAN LEWIS:
Your not going to.

JOHN CARTER:
I'm sorry.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Shh... I love you Carter, and I'm going to take care of you.

{CARTER'S BREATHING BECOME WORSE, AND SUSAN STARTS CRYING EVEN HARDER.}

JOHN CARTER:
{GASPING}
I love you, and I'm sorry.

{SUSAN HOLDS CARTER IN HER ARMS AS HE SLOWLY AND PAINFULLY DIES IN HER ARMS.}

SUSAN LEWIS:
Carter, I'm sorry, I love you. Goodbye.

{SHE SLOWLY SAYS THOSE WORDS AND THEN KISSES CARTER'S FACE AND
SHE WALKS OUTSIDE TO MEET THE AMBULANCE. THE SCENE FADES OUT.}

DAVE MALUCCI:
{TO SUSAN}
I'm late.

SUSAN LEWIS:

DAVE MALUCCI:
I'm so sorry... I can't believe Carter's gone.

SUSAN LEWIS:
Yeah. I know what you mean.

{THE PRIEST STARTS TALKING AGAIN}

DAVE MALUCCI:

SUSAN LEWIS:
Long story.

DAVE MALUCCI:
I'm not going an...

SUSAN LEWIS:
{CUTTING MALUCCI OFF}
Shhhh...

DAVE MALUCCI:
Sorry...

{THE SCENE GOES BACK TO THE PRIEST MOURNING THE DEATH OF ABBY AND CARTER. HE IS TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH GOOD THE TWO OF THEM DID. SUSAN CAN'T LISTEN TO HIM, BECAUSE SHE KEEPS ON REMEMBERING ALL THE GOOD TIMES, AND SHE STARTS CRYING.}

{SUSAN THEN LOOKS UP AND SEES SOMETHING STRANGE. IN THE BACK OF THE CEMETERY, SHE SEES CARTER WALKING TOWARDS ABBY. ABBY GREETS HIM WITH OPEN ARMS. THEN THEY NOTICE SUSAN AND SMILE. SUSAN TURNS PRATT AND CHEN}

Maybe our future holds all the hopes?

SUSAN LEWIS:
Maybe.
