SUMMARY: Something will happen one of the ER staff members.
Elizabeth Corday sighed as she walked into the ER of Cook County
Hospital. Her boss and close friend Kerry Weaver gave her a warm smile
as she entered the lounge.
"Morning," Kerry said. "You look stressed, everything all right?"
"No," Elizabeth said putting her coat and purse in her locker. "My
heater broke and I had to call the repair man and they said they
couldn't get here until tomorrow. I'm probably going to end up freezing
again tonight. Then my mother calls and says she's not coming in from
London." Elizabeth slammed her locker shut and turned to Kerry. "This
day can't possibly get any worse." Then Carol came running into the
room.
"Elizabeth, Kerry we need you. Trauma coming in and it doesn't sound
good."
Elizabeth grabbed her doctors coat and raced out the door Kerry
following behind her. She raced into trauma one and saw a about seven
lying on the exam table. "What happened here?"
"Seven year old girl got shot in the chest, unresponsive, BP's 90
over 60," Carol said.
"We need to pull the bullet out," Elizabeth said. "All right let's
move." After an hour of working they were finally able to get the
bullet out. "Let's take her to the OR, NOW." The little girl was raced
to the OR.
"Do they know who shot her?" Elizabeth asked Carol as they stood
looking at the mess of trauma one.
"No, they don't. I couldn't get in touch with the parents," Carol
said. She looked at Elizabeth. "Liz are you feeling OK?"
"I'm fine, I just didn't get a good night sleep last night. I'll be
fine," Elizabeth assured her friend. She started for the door. "I've got
patients." Elizabeth walked out of the room. She didn't know what was
wrong with her and why she didn't have any energy. Then Elizabeth
thought she saw a very strange sight, Lucy. Elizabeth rubbed her eyes
and looked again, there she was, Lucy standing by the nurses station.
"I'm seeing things," Elizabeth said to herself.
"No, you're not," Lucy whispered suddenly appearing beside her. "I'm
really here."
Elizabeth looked at Lucy, she still had the hospital gown on and she
was still just as pale as she'd been the day she died. "Lucy? What's
going on?"
"I'm here to warn you but so far you are the only one who can see
me," Lucy said.
"Warn me, about what?" Elizabeth still not believing that Lucy was
standing before her.
"Be careful today Dr. Corday, your life depends on it," Lucy
said.
"What do you mean?" Elizabeth asked.
"You'll see, don't worry I won't leave you. Now get back to work
before people start to get suspicious."
Elizabeth walked away from Lucy trying to concentrate on her work.
All through the day nothing happened and Elizabeth wondered if Lucy had
been right about something happening. Just as she was about to cross the
street a car came zooming past knocking right into Elizabeth sending her
to the ground.
Elizabeth awoke some time later to find herself in a white room,
alone.
"No one can see you now," came Lucy's voice. "They're working really
hard to save you." Lucy helped Elizabeth off the bed and turned her
toward the window on the left side of the bed. "See."
Elizabeth saw herself lying on a stretcher, blood all over her. "Am
I going to be all right?"
"They don't know, it's too early to tell," Lucy said. "Liz you've
got to go back, you can't stay with me forever."
"I wish," Elizabeth said sitting back down on the bed. "I miss you
Lucy and so does the rest of the crew."
"I know," Lucy said sitting down beside Elizabeth and putting an arm
around her.
"Can't I stay with you just for a little while?"
"I suppose but you have to go back within a day, no buts," Lucy
warned.
"All right all right," Elizabeth said laughing.
"Pressures still low," Carol said. "Liz can you hear me?"
No answer.
"Still not responsive," Kerry said. "She needs to get to the OR NOW."
Kerry wheeled Lizzy toward the OR. "Get Benton down here now."
"I think he's in OR three," Carol said. "I just called up there,
he's ready and waiting."
Kerry nodded and took the elevator to the OR. Peter met her in the
hall.
"Oh, man how did this happen?" Peter asked.
"She got hit by a car," Kerry said trying to hide her emotions.
"Just let her be all right Peter."
"I'll do everything I can for her Kerry," Peter said. He touched her
gently on the arm. "I won't let anything happen to her."
"If she dies Peter, I'm firing you," Kerry warned.
"Go on back down to the ER, I've got everything under control,"
Peter said and went on down the hall wheeling Elizabeth. Peter sighed,
he had to make sure Lizzy was going to be all right or he was going to
be out of a job.
"See how worried they are," Lucy said as Elizabeth and she stood in
OR three watching Peter operate on Elizabeth. "Kerry threatened to fire
Peter if he didn't make you better."
"What are my injuries? Can you tell?" Elizabeth asked.
"Two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a nasty blow to the head,"
Lucy replied. Then there was a long beeping sound.
"Give me the paddles NOW," Peter screamed. "Charge to 100, clear."
"Liz you have to go back now before it's too late," Lucy urged.
"Please."
Elizabeth sighed. "Will you promise to check on us from time to
time. I really miss you Lucy and Carter misses you most of all."
"I promise to visit as often as I can," Lucy said. "Now go on,
before Peter is out of a job."
Elizabeth gave Lucy one last hug and closed her eyes.
"She's back," Peter said. "All right, let's sow her up."
"That was a close call Dr. Benton," a nurse said.
"I know, but she was lucky though. Could you call down to the ER and
tell Weaver that Liz is out of surgery," Peter said as he sowed up
Elizabeth.
"Sure."
"Dr. Weaver," Carol said. "Dr. Corday is out of surgery."
Kerry raced toward the elevators and went quickly toward the OR
recovery room. She met Peter in the hallway. "How is she?"
"Stable, still on 21% oxygen," Peter said.
"That's better than nothing," Kerry said. "Can I see her?"
"Sure, she's not awake yet though," Peter said. He led Kerry where
Elizabeth lay.
Kerry sat down beside Elizabeth's bedside and took her hand. "You're
going to be fine." Then she felt Elizabeth stir. "Liz, can you hear me?"
"Lucy?" Elizabeth asked to the voice, which was speaking to her.
"Liz it's Kerry," Kerry said shaking her awake.
Elizabeth opened her eyes. "Kerry?"
"You're fine now," Kerry said. "How are you feeling?"
"Sore, I'm having trouble breathing a little," Elizabeth said
weakly. "What happened?"
"You were hit by a car."
"I saw Lucy Kerry, I'm not kidding I saw her," Elizabeth said trying
to sit up.
Kerry eased Elizabeth back down on the bed. "You need to rest, you
just had major surgery." Kerry gave Elizabeth a hug and walked quietly
out of the room. She found Carol standing outside the door.
"How is she?" Carol asked as Kerry came out of the room.
"Awake, and very sore. She's very out of it," Kerry said heading
toward the elevators. "She claims she saw Lucy."
"Lucy's dead," Carol said before the elevator doors closed. "I'll
talk to you downstairs.
Kerry nodded just as the elevator doors closed.
Carol went into the room where Lizzy lay. She appeared to be sleeping
but awoke when Carol took her hand. "Hi, it's Carol how are you
feeling?"
"Sore," Elizabeth said. "How's everything downstairs?"
"Fine, don't worry about that. You just concentrate on getting
better," Carol said. "Kerry said you told her you saw Lucy."
"I did Carol," Elizabeth said. "I'm not kidding, at first I thought
I was seeing things and then she spoke to me."
Carol got up to leave. "You get some rest and I'll try to come back
later."
Elizabeth nodded and sighed. After Carol left Elizabeth felt someone
touch her arm and looked up to see Lucy standing by her bedside. "I was
hoping you'd come back. They don't believe me, they don't believe that I
saw you or I'm seeing you."
"They will, in time," Lucy said.
"Lucy do you really have to go back, please don't leave me alone."
"I will never leave you alone Dr. Corday," Lucy scolded. "You can
tell me anything you want, whenever you want." Lucy sat down beside
Elizabeth and watched as she fell asleep.
"How's Corday?" Carter asked Dr. Weaver as they walked down the hall
together.
“Sore and completely out of it," Kerry said. "She claimed she saw
Lucy."
"Really,” Carter said. "Wow."
"yeah, maybe it's the medication?" Kerry said.
"How long before she's back to work?"
"A few weeks, maybe," Kerry said going into exam room two. "Carter,
Patients, NOW."
Carter laughed and went about his business.
The next day Elizabeth was well enough to be moved to her own room.
Everyone in the ER was glad she was going to be OK. Elizabeth had one
secret that she'd never get anyone to believe, that she saw Lucy Knight.
Carol, Weaver, Carter Benton and the rest of the crew were in and out of
her room all day long. Elizabeth couldn't get one wink of sleep without
someone waking her up. At least she still had Lucy she could confide
into without having to worry about Lucy asking her if she was feeling
all right.
"You're going to make a full recovery," Lucy said appearing beside
Elizabeth.
Elizabeth knew she was right.
