AUTHOR'S NOTES: This was my first piece of ER fan fiction, so if it's not great, please don't be mean.
SUMMARY: Anything really is possible. A weird psych patient goes missing and lots of other happenings on a day in the ER.
It's midday in the ER and everything has gone strangely quiet, for the time of year. It's March, there's still a lot of snow around and there's always a truck load of minor's suffering from aches and pains from falls and from bad colds and flu from the weather.
We see Dave Malucci, a young second - year resident sitting on chair in the admin area with his feet up on the desk.
"Get your feet off of the desk!" A voice shreaked at Malucci. He looked up, it was a woman in her late 30's to early 40's with firey red hair, glasses balancing on top of her head, dressed in a pure white lab coat, with a stethescope around her neck, and was walking towards him using a crutch. "I said get your feet off of that desk Malucci and go and attend to some patients!" it was Kerry Weaver, the Chief of Emergency Medicine, meaning that she was incharge in the ER.
Dave took his feet of the desk and stood up from the chair in which he was sitting on. "Patients, what patients?" Dave factfully said to Kerry. "I don't see any patients, it's been quiet like this all morning." Dave said to her, he was fed up with her constant moaning at him. He looked round to see the head nurse Haleh Adams shaking her head with dismay, she knew what was about to come.
"Well if you don't have no patients to attent to you can go and do your paper work can't you Malucci?" Kerry said to the young doctor.
"Uh huh Chief." Dave answered trying to not look embarrased. She shouted at him daily but he still wasn't used to it, and took it all to heart. Dave could feel his face turning a bright salmon pink colour.
"You know the drill Malucci, you have nothing to do, you do your paper work. You learnt all that in Medical school." She said to him. "As if you listened." She said under her breath. "And if you ever talk to me like that again, I'll have you doing all of the scut work for the next month!" she snapped then walked away into the doctors' lounge.
Dave turned round to see if anyone had noticed, to see Haleh turn away and get back on with the report she was writing, then John Carter walked up, he was a senior resident in the ER and could easily make an attending in a year or two.
"What!" Dave said to Carter, as he saw Carter had a huge grin across his face.
"Nothing." Carter said.
"No no I know your smug about somethin' Carter, so... what is it?" Dave said starting to get impatient.
"Okay." Carter agreed. "You got an earful from Weaver again didn't ya." Carter said.
"Yeah yeah I know, stop reminding me. She's really got it in for me big time but I haven't got a clue what about." Dave said seriously to Carter.
"Oh please." Carter said. "You're late for your shift practically every day, erm... you go into a free exam room and sleep when you think no one has noticed, you slack on the job like you were doing a moment ago, it takes you a month to fill out your paper work when the other residents do it in a couple of hours *Dave interupted* "I don't take a month, well maybe three weeks, but... but that's not the point." Dave squeeled.
"Haha!." Carter laughed. "What else can I think of..." Carter said pausing for a moment to think. "Oh yes, you flirt with your young, female patients and to think about it the female Med. Students aswell and you don't know when to keep your opinions to yourself. No wonder Dr. Benton punched you." Carter said out the long list looking at Dave who didn't say a word.
*Dr. Peter Benton, is an intern in the hopital. He punched Dave after Dave slagged off the whole reason why Peter's nephew Jesse, was brought into the ER with a Gun Shot Wound and later died resulting from it. Dave later went to apologise to Peter, which resulted in no sympathy from Peter and he punched him, so Dave fell through the emergency doors from the trauma room into the hall of the ER. The fight had to be broken up by some of the ER staff.*

In the OR Robert Romano is in his office, Romano is the Chief of Staff in the hospital, meaning he's the head and he's in charge of all the going's on in County General and what he says goes.
"No no no, absolutely NO! Elizabeth." He was moaning at Elizabeth Corday, a talented English Surgeon in the OR.
"But Robert." Elizabeth said.
"I've said no, how many times? *He went to count with his fingers, but kept loosing his count*, Oh it doesn't matter how many times. Anyway I've told you loads of times Elizabeth that the answers no, so I mean no no NO!" Romano boomed at Elizabeth.
"I don't think you understand Robert," *Romano interupted Elizabeth* "Oh I do understand Elizabeth," *Elizabeth interupted Romano*. "No you don't Robert." Elizabeth said. "I've got a young teenager, 13 - years - old, if you need to know the age. She's a keen sports woman, she used to do loads of swimming, horse back riding, baseball, basketball, and hockey." Elizabeth told Romano.
"Sob story." Romano said sounding very bored by Elizabeth's attempt to get him to allow surgery. "Where's this exactly leading Elizabeth?" Romano asked.
"I'm glad you asked." Elizabeth said, playing him at his own game.
"Do you know what Elizabeth? I wouldn't waste my breath if I were you. I don't care, I don't care, she's too young for that operation. I don't care if it'll change her life back to what it was, it's not life threatening so save me the sob story please, and it costs the hospital too much anyway." Romano heartlessly said to Elizabeth.
"Fine!" Elizabeth said leaving his office and slamming the door behind herself.
Romano laughed hysterically, "I love it when she's mad." He said to himself.
"Arrrrrugh! That man!." Elizabeth said.
"Who? Romano?." Mark said aproaching Elizabeth. Mark is an attending in the ER and is married to Elizabeth.
"The one and only."Elizabeth said.
"Oh don't let him get to you." Mark said putting his arm around Elizabeth's shoulders. "It's my break so shall we go across the road to Doc Magoos to get some lunch. *He looked at Elizabeth* I'm buying." He said with a look of persuasion in his eyes.
"Ok, you're on." Elizabeth answered.

In the ER, Abby is frantically running around and looking in every room possible.
"Are you okay Abby?" a voice said to her. Abby turned round it was Dr. Kovac, a Croatian attending in the ER.
"To be honest, no." Abby said. "I've lost a patient. A 45 year - old female. She was brought in drunk with her husband whose also drunk and is sobering up in an exam room." Abby rubbed her eyes. "I'm kinda embarassed you know, I don't know where she'll end up."
"I'm sure you'll find her in the end Abby." Luka reasurinly said to her.
"Yeah." Abby said with a smile. "Anyway, I'd better get looking and I'll call Dr. Legaspi because I don't know how the woman will react, she was brought in by the EMT's singing 'Dancing Queen'!"
"Good Luck." Luka said as Abby walked away.
"Thank you." Abby answered as she went into the elavator.
Luka turned around and went into an exam room where Carter about to start sutering a mail man's hand after he got bitten by a Jack Russel. "Is everything okay in here Carter?" Luka asked.
"Yeah, everythings going just fine." Carter said as he wipped the wound with some anticeptic. AS Luka left the room.
"Ah bloody job." Said the mail man.
Carter didn't say a word and carried on cleaning thw wound.
"Arugh!" The mail man shouted out. "Can't you be a bit gentler?" he hollered
"I'm being as gentle as I can." Carter said. "It will hurt slightly anyway." "Right Mr Fardo, when was the last time you had a tetnus jab?" Carter asked is patient.
"Tetnus jab, what the hell's a tetnus jab? and why the hell do I need one of those for. I'm a grown man what do I need with jabs?" The patient growned.
"I'll take it as you don't know when you had you're last jab then." Carter said. "A tetnus jab stops you catching infections from bad cuts, and you'll need one with that bad cut. Can you pull up your sleave please?"
The patient pulled up his sleave and Carter gave him the tetnus jab, then finally finished sutering the cut.
"So when do I have to come back and have these stitches out then doc?" the patient said to Carter.

"Hey you Malatucili." Romano yelled at Dave.
"Er it's Malucci, not Malatucili." Dave said to Romano.
"Oh whatever." Romano said. "Anyway have you seen Weaver? She sent Corday that God Damn patient who she's been boring me to death about all morning. Don't people know the meaning of no in this hospital?"
Dave just smiled and said, "No I haven't seen Weaver sorry, I think Abby asked her to page Dr. Legaspi down for psych some reason and I think she may have gone up to psych to get her down here instead." Dave said.
"Humn I see. So much for modern technology, what a joke." Romano moaned.
"Sorry Dr. Romano I don't follow." Dave said.
"God don't you ever listen Maluctucili, I said what's the point of Weaver going up to tell Legaspi to come down to the ER, when she has a pager that she can easily send her a message on." Romano said and he walked up the stairs and to psych. He passed Dr. Weaver who had just came out of psych.
"Ah Kerry what a pleasant surprise, I thought that only the ER was your teratory." Romano sarcastically said to Kerry.
"It is Robert." Kerry replied.
"Then why the hell are you up here?" Romano questioned.
"Abby Lockhart needed a psych consult so I thought I'd come up here and get Kim." Kerry answered Romano
"What's wrong with your pager?" Romano asked.
"Nothing, it's perfectly alright." Kerry said.
"No more." Romano said. "I want to carry this conversation on in my office, people are starting to stare.
In the OR, Abby and Kim were looking for the drunk patient, when they heard singing coming from Romano's office.
"I can here something." Abby said.
"So can I." Kim said. Kim opened the door to Romano's office, where the patient was standing on Romano's desk singing 'Thank you for the music', at the top of her voice and being drunk she wasn't singing at all in tune.
"Mrs Falmer can you please get off the desk." Kim said try to get her off of the desk.
The patient took no notice and stayed on Romano's desk with her hands waving in the air singing "I say thank you for the music the song's I'm singing, thanks for all..."
Just that moment Romano and Kerry were walking around the corner. "What the hell's going on!" Romano boomed. "Abby, Kim what are you doing in my office? And what the hell is that doing on my desk!?"
"Well as you can see..." Abby began. "Yes I can see!" Romano answered. The patient carried on singing. "Will you shut the ---- up and get off my desk!" Romano screamed and with that the patient shut up and began to get off of his desk. "And take her to back down to the ER." He ordered Abby.
"Don't you think she should go to psych?" Kim asked Romano. "They have enough minors and traumas to deal with in the ER, without a patient who clearly needs psychiateric care." Kim stated to Romano. "There also may be other problems, she may be Bipolar so she'll need more care."
"And how do you know that's she's Bipolar Dr. Legaspi?" Romano asked.
Abby had now left the office and was waiting outside with the patient who was now sitting in a chair horrifically crying.
"Abby suspects her to be Bipolar." Kim told Romano.
"And what would Abby Lockhart, a Medical Student, know about Bipolar?" Romano said to Kim thinking that he knew it all.
"Because her mother's bipolar." Kim said to Romano, which shut him up of the whole matter.
"I'll deal with you later Kerry." Romano said and closed his office door.
"What did he want to talk to you about?" Kim asked Kerry.
"I think he was a bit suspicious why I had to come and speak to you about a psych consult other than paging you." Kerry answered as her pager bleeped as a stat call for the ER. "Anyway I'd better go, I've gotta STAT to the ER, I'll call you tonight."
"You'd better." Kim said.
"I will." Kerry said as she left for the ER.
Romano who was still in his office, couldn't belive what had just happened. He couldn't make Kim look a fool, so he decided to get someone to blame. "Shirley, Shirley." He wasn't bothered to leave his office so he decided to call Shirley's name at the top of his voice in hope that she'll come to his office.
"You called Dr. Romano." Shirley.
"Yes, yes yes I did didn't I. Do you know why I've called you in here Shirley?" He snidly asked Shirley.
"I can't say that I recall you wanted to speak to me." Shirley answered unknowing of what he was talking about, most of the time he did talk a load of rubbish that she took no notice of.
"Okay, I'll get straight to the point." Romano said. "The drunk woman, who that Med. Student Abby Lockport, Lockhart, whatever her surname is. Well Abby suspects her to be bipolar. She escaped, I dunno how from the ER. I really think that place is getting worse and worse, that Kerry Weaver should get more strict with those residents." Romano blabbered on.
"What's the point of this conversation?" Shirley asked.
"I'm glad you asked Shirley. Why was that woman able to get into my office and be left in here for obviously a long space of time? I thought you're job is to check who comes into the OR."
"I honestly didn't see her come in." Shirley said.
"Well that's not good enough Shirley." Romano said as he said it Shriley nooded "I know I know it won't happen again." She answered.
"Damn right it won't happen again Shirley! because I'm not going to let it happen again because you're fired!" Romano boomed. "But Dr. Romano." Shirley tried to change his mind. "No no no no Shirley, don't try to change my mind."
Tears became to gather in Shirley's eyes so she ran out of Romano's office and down the hall of the OR where she passed Benton and Elizabeth Corday.
"Hey Shirley." Peter said but Shirley didn't answer. "What's up?" Peter asked after she didn't answer. Elizabeth and Peter looked at her waiting for an answer.
"Dr. Romano's just blamed the whole thing with the psych patient on walk about, which somehow got into his office, all on me, and he fired me."
Elizabeth and Peter looked at each other with disbelief, Romano had overpowered a collegue like this once to many times before.

In an exam room in the ER, Cleo Finch a paediatrician and a second year resident in the ER has a patient, a young 6 year - old boy who had swallowed a coin.
"How did you manage to swallow the quarter sweetie?" Cleo asked.
The boy didn't answer so his distraught mother spoke for him. "We were walking home from school when he saw the ice cream truck coming. He pleaded me to let him have one so I did. I gave him some money, which he must have put in his mouth wihle he was running. He tripped over a loose paving slab and swallowed it."
"Okay." Cleo said looking at the boy. "Everythings gonna be just fine." she smiled. Cleo turned to the mother. "I'll have to order an X - ray so we can see how far down the coin is, then we can determine whether he will need surgery to remove it, or if it will be able to pass out of the system on it's own."
"What's are they gonna do mommy?" the boy asked.
"They're just gonna take a picture of your body with a special machine so they can look and see where the coin in honey."
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Dr. Jing - Mei Chen, who is a resident in the ER, is looking at an X - Ray, of a young woman who she fears has a brain tumour. "Have you seen Romano?" Peter asked as he came up behind Jing - Mei.
"No sorry." She said whilst studying the X - Ray.
"Oh, thanks anyway." Peter replied. Peter looked at the X - Ray sheet on the board. "That's a nice tumour that your patients got there." he said to Jing - Mei.
"I know, that's what I was afraid of. My patients only 28 years - old, and is against any kind of surgery, in any shape or form. She's also anti - hospital's but her partner dragged her to us because she was in so much pain and agony with migraine type of head aches, and she's also blacked out and suffered a seizure last night but refused to come to us. I don't know what to do and what to tell her." Jing - Mei said to Peter.
"Tell her the truth. If she doesn't have surgery she'll die, and the tumours not too big so it'll be able to be operated on in this hospital." Peter informed Jing - Mei.
Jing - Mei said nothing and just sat on a chair with her head in her hands. When Peter spoke. "I'll speak to her if you want. I'm a surgeon and I can talk her through the procedure, survival rates either way and so on."
"That would be great, thanks Dr. Benton." Jing - Mei said.

In the ER, at the admin desk. Randi was sitting next to Frank, who were both by the phone. Things on the front for the two desk clerks had been quite quiet. A bubble popped in the gum that Randi was chewing.
"Can you stop that?" Frank asked.
"Stop what?" Randi said.
"Blowing bubbles like a little kid." Frank outbursted.
"Yeah whatever, sorry." Randi said trying to pass the time.
The ER had become to start getting busier, and most of the doctors and nurses were dealing with patients in the curtains or in exam rooms. Dave who had finally finished his paper work, went to sit down on a chair behind the admin desk, but saw Dr. Weaver aproaching so he quickly got to the board to see what patient he could attend to next.
"Ah tough choice either a guy with food poisoning in exam room 3, who I saw puking his guts up earlier or a bloke with the same problem but the other end in exam room 4." Dave said. "Why do I always get the great patients." he said sarcastically.
"We all get patients like that sometimes Dave, we're doctor's, that's what we do." Kerry informed him. "You can do the guy in exam room 3, Mr Gamero, he's been in there for five hours already."
"Okay, exam room 3." Dave said with some hesitation. Dave walked up to the door of exam room 3, when Carter aproached and smirked. "Oh you may laugh Carter, why do I always get left with the bad patients?" he said as confidence turned into a winge.
"Because Weaver has it in for you and diliberatly leaves them all for you." Carter said sarcastically. "No Dave, it's just bad luck we all get that once in a while." Carter informed Dave.
"But I've got a theory." Dave said to Carter. "I reakon Weaver fancies me, she must do, that's why she treats me badly every second of the day when she has the chance." Dave said looking at Carter to say something.
Carter outbursted with laugher. "Weaver fancy you!" Carter said really loudly as he laughed. Then he saw the turning of faces, which made him feel so glad that Weaver wasn't out in the admin area and that she'd gone into the durtain area, so he turned Dave around to speak to him so that they werre facing the wall. "She doesn't fancy you, you annoy her, there's more hatred there than love." Carter was still finding it difficult to keep his voice down. "You get on her nerves you annoy her and anyone in this hospital can see that."
Dave turned to go into the exam room, when Carter finished what he was saying. 'And Dave, I hope you have a change of scrubs 'cos the patient feels a bit off colour, you don't want to stay in them all day if he feels a bit worse if you know what I mean!"

A few hours had passed. Drs Carter, Kovac, and Greene were in trauma, along with nurses Haleh, Chuny, and Lydia.
Kerry walked into the trauma room. "Luka you're needed in the OR, something about an appy patient you refered yesterday."
"Yeah, but I'm needed in here." Kovac answered.
"I'll take over." Kerry answered. So Luka left trauma.
"Right ABG, cbc, Chem 7." Kerry shouted over all of the commotion.
"BP's falling 40/80." Lydia shouted.
The patient went unconcious so the machines were bleeping.
"Paddles." Carter shouted for. Haleh handed him the paddles. "Right lets charge to 250." Carter said. "CLEAR!" The patient still wasn't responding. "Charge once again to 300." Carter said. The machine charged then "CLEAR!". There was still no rythm.
"Charge to 360." Mark said.
They charged but nothing happened. The doctor's put their heads down, they knew he was a hopeless case. Kerry looked at the clock, "Time of death 19:03."
"What a way to go." Mark said. "Heart attack in the middle of the street then to die of CHF. He has no ID so we don't know nothing, who he is or where he came from."

Elizabeth and Peter are discussing Romano in Elizabeth's office.
"He's gone too far this time, that man should be taught a lesson, something that he won't forget for a long while." Peter said to Elizabeth.
"Or..." Elizabeth started, "Something that jeopardises he's position." Elizabeth said with a huge grin growing on her face.
"Carry on." Peter said to Elizabeth.
"We could get the whole OR department, and also the rest of the hospital to go on strike. He'll threaten to fire us all but he won't do that he can't fire thew whole of his staff!" Elizabeth said nearly bursting into laughter.
"Yeah!" Peter said, "Then he may put up wages that he has docked and bring back people he has for no reason, fired, such as Shirley. He'll find out sooner or later that he can't cope without her and will be at her door step grovelling for her to return."
Peter agreed with Elizabeth that her though was pure genious, so he went out into the OR, and Elizabeth went to the ER and they both made their way around all of the departments in the hospital to tell the staff. They will make an ultimatum to Romano, if he doesn't pay the staff the money the deserve or rightfully own because he has docked their wages, or if he doesn't give Shirley, they'll all go on strike, not just Peter and Elizabeth but the whole of County General Hospital.
All of the staff seemed to like the idea but Kerry Weaver was a bit warey, but she was soon talked round.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The next day, it's just after midday and Romano has just returned to the hospital after lunch with some woman. Elizabeth and Peter were waiting for him at the ambulance bay entrance when Romano approaches them.
"What are you two standing there looking all stern about, that's my job. *he laughed* Oooooh hooo hooo. Haven't you two got any patients to get on with? You don't want me to dock your pay do you." Romano looked at Elizabeth and Peter in turn who just stood there and started at him.
"When are you going to give the staff the pay they deserve and when are you gonna give Shirley her job back which she rightfully deserves Dr. Romano?" Peter asked impatiently.
"Erm let me think," Romano said. "Never."
"You've lead us to have no choice but to go on STRIKE." Elizabeth said really loudly so the whole or the ER heard so they knew to begin it off.
"WHAT! you can't go on strike, you can't get back to work!" Romano hollered.
Elizabeth and Peter stood and laughed in Romano's face.
"You're fired! the lot of you." He yelled.
"What the whole hospital, be reasonable Robert you can't fire the whole lot of us." Kerry said, she'd approached them from behind and was standing against the emergency doors.
"Fine fine, you can have all of the money you deserve,. Everyone's getting a pay rise." Romano said quickly, he hated not being in control.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" Peter asked.
Romano looked round trying to think what, what possibly could he forget. He then saw Shirley sitting in Peter's car and approached her. He swallowed his pride and said, "Shirley, I'm terribly sorry for blaming everything that happened yesterday on you, I shouldn'd have, would you please except my apology and come back."
Shirley looked blankly at him, trying to concider whether to or not.
"And of course you will get a pay rise, and a bonus for yesterday." Romano said quickly so she would change her mind.
"OK." Shirley said.
"Great." Romano answered. He gave an evil look at Peter, Elizabeth and Kerry and went into the ER to get up to the OR so he could sit and sulk in his office.
"I didn't think he had it in him to apologise." Shirley said.
"Me neither." Kerry said.
"But then anything's possible, and it's even possible with an arrogant -------- like him." Elizabeth said.
