SUMMARY: Carter proposes to Susan! :)
It was a warm, sunny night in Chicago. John Carter and Susan Lewis walked
hand-in-hand as they left a romantic dinner at their favorite restaurant, the
Lakeview Inn. Carter, as he was called by his friends, looked over at Susan
and smiled. Susan caught him staring at her and grinned.
"What is it?" she asked softly. Carter shook his head.
"I still can't believe that you came back to Chicago," he began, "and that we
fell in love. What did I ever do to become so lucky?" Susan leaned in and
kissed Carter.
"I'm the lucky one," she said. "I love you." Carter stopped in the middle
of the street and kissed Susan passionately.
"I love you, too," he replied. "But I'm not telling you what the surprise is
until we get to my place." Susan frowned.
"Not even a little hint?" she pleaded. Carter put his arm around Susan and
they began walking again.
"Susan, we'll be at my apartment soon enough," Carter snuggled Susan closer
to him. "I love having my own place now." Susan looked up at Carter.
"Me, too," she replied and kissed Carter. "It's wonderful to wake up in your
arms every morning." Carter looked at Susan again as they walked down the
street and thought about how his life had changed in the past year. He had
had a crush on Susan from the moment they'd first met in 1994, and he'd even
tried to kiss her that same Christmas, but Susan had backed away.
Afterwards, Carter fought his feelings for Susan. He'd had many girlfriends
since then, but he had never felt the intense love for anyone that he did for
Susan Lewis.
Susan watched Carter as they walked along. When they had met years earlier,
she never thought they would fall in love one day. Carter was a young
medical student, she a resident when they first met. Susan often thought of
the night when Carter tried to kiss her, and many times, in her fantasies,
she had returned his emotions. When she had left Arizona to return to
Chicago, the one person who had been on her mind a lot was Carter. This
surprised her, but when Susan saw Carter again, the old feelings returned.
Now they were more in love than ever. Susan secretly hoped that she and
Carter would have a future together. They had talked a couple of times about
moving in together and getting married, but so far, Carter had yet to
propose.
Carter and Susan reached his townhouse. Carter opened the door and he and
Susan entered. As Carter turned the lights on, he heard Susan gasp in
surprise.
"Carter, this is beautiful!" she exclaimed, looking around the room. Roses
filled every corner of the living room. On the coffee table sat a large box
wrapped with a red bow. Carter led Susan to the sofa and they sat down.
"I wanted this night to be perfect," Carter began. He handed the box to
Susan and she opened it. Inside was a beautiful jewelry box. Susan opened
the jewelry box and found a small black box inside. Tears filling her eyes,
she looked at Carter.
"Is this what I think it is?" she whispered. Carter took the small black box
from Susan's hands and got down on his knee. He took Susan's hand and looked
into her eyes.
"Susan Lewis, I love you. You have made my life better in so many ways.
You've made me a better person. Will you please do me the honor of becoming
my wife?" Tears fell down Susan's face as she leaned in and kissed Carter.
"Yes," she replied. "Yes, I would love to be your wife!" She and Carter
kissed and Carter slipped the ring onto her finger.
"Susan Lewis Carter," Carter said. "I love the sound of that."
"So do I," Susan replied. The happy couple kissed again, dreaming of their
future together.
