Dr. Doug Ross stared at the new medical student John Howie. He sighed. Here we go again! He thought to himself. Every so often, a new rotation of interns came. This time, Doug was fed up. His wife, Carol, and their twins, Tessa and Kate, were driving him bonkers. The good news was they were visiting her friends in Chicago. The last thing he needed was some new dumb kid, who would bother him.
"Dr. Ross… Dr. Ross…" John said. "What's up…."
"Sorry, I'm Doug. This is the E.R., that's Carol, she's the head nurse and she'll be who you touch base with." Doug said annoyed.
"Okay. What should I do first?" John asked eager to start.
"Get me a coffee."
"I thought I'd be helping with the patients." John replied.
"Well, if you want to help the patients out, get me coffee! Do you want a sleepy doctor?!" he said agitated to the nth degree.
"Fine!" John said he too agitated. He could tell this was NOT going to be a fun internship!
Suddenly Doug heard a message over the P.A.
"Dacta' Doug Raws, telephone. Dacta' Doug Raws" the Texan drawled.
Doug Ross sensed that today was going to be an 'interesting day' to say the least! Doug felt a tug at his heart as he walked over to the reception area and picked up the phone. He recognized the voice was from his past.
"Hello, is this Doug?" the voice asked.
"Mark? Mark Greene?" It was a doctor he had worked with several years before.
"Yes… I have some really bad news."
"There was an accident. Carol and the twins Doug."
"Tessa-Leigh is in the hospital, in surgery, she has broken her jaw, arm. Kate is traumatized and had a concussion and a broke her leg and hip."
"What about Carol?"
"Doug… She… She passed on."
Doug hung up the phone. His love and his life had gone forever as he knew it. Doug knew immediately that he had to start over. He packed his bags that night and left his apartment forever.
At the hospital, a week later, Mark was waiting for Doug. It had been ages, and although they had wanted to see each other again, it wasn't under these circumstances at all. Carol had once worked at the hospital where they stood, but now she was gone. Doug embraced Mark.
"Doug, it's ok... it's ok… I'll help you, so will Liz Corday, remember her."
"I know. Is my old position open?"
"What?" Mark asked shocked.
"I… I'm moving back here."
"Yes.. It is… Doug, don't make any hasty decisions."
"I've thought about it."
"Ok… If you want it."
