SUMMARY: The tables turn for Carter and Abby.
Abby was woken up by the sound of the phone ringing. God, it was 3:17 in the morning. Who could be calling at such an hour? She slowly got up, and turned over to her nightstand. With a groggy voice she answered.
"What do you want, Carter?"
Carter knew that she would be sleeping, and had to work the next shift. But he needed her. The last few days had completely been a blur. He couldn't sit there and watch her suffer. But he had no choice. No one else cared. His mind wandered back to Abby as she answered the phone. She was sort of mad, yet had a voice of compassion.
Abby expected that. She knew Carter's grandmother had been in deteriorating health for a while, but no one, not even John, had expected her to go so soon.
"Want me to come?"
Carter knew Kerry would be mad that Abby wouldn't be at work, but he needed her. He needed a friend's shoulder to cry on, to realize his feelings, to let go of the world. He always did that in *her* arms.
Abby knew he liked to play strong. Like he could handle everything. But now he needed her, and she knew it. He had been through so much with her. Her mom, her brother, he alcoholism, her depression. Yet she never had a chance to be there for him, to hold him, caress him, love him, to wipe away *his* tears.
"I'll be right there."
Carter was glad. He couldn't do everything on his own. He was exhausted, and mentally dead. He had stayed by Gamma's side forever, through her last days. He loved her, but he knew it was time to move on.
"I'll be waiting."
Abby knew it was her time to help with everything. She knew she could make him happy. Maybe make this a little easier. No death is every easy. Just like the baby she killed because of Richard. She regretted it now. All too late. But maybe it was time to start over. She knew she could.
"Carter, you know I love you?"
Carter knew that she cared. He loved when she was around. He couldn't go on without her. She was his saving light. His angel sent down from heaven.
"Yeah. I do." He paused. "I love you, too."
