SUMMARY: Susan Lewis returns back to County, explains what's been going on and her feelings.
A cold breeze blew through her hair, which made her hair gently sway from side to side. The wind then blew harder, she shuddered, and pulled up the zip of her coat higher and tucked her hair behind her ears. The train then pulled up, it seemed to appear out of no where, she stood off of the El platform and onto the train.
People gazed at her as she walked down the isle of the train until she found an empty seat. The way they were looking at her, they looked as if she was a ghost from the past and that they'd seen her somewhere before. As a matter of fact, this could be true. She used to be from these parts but she moved away like most people do, but she decided to return after a long while. Things seemed to have changed a lot. She sat down and sighed and tried to fix her hair, she then went into her bag turned her mobile phone onto 'silent' and connected her pager to her belt on her trousers. She looked up and saw a familiar face smiling in her direction, she smiled back but said nothing. She then pulled a white lab coat out of her bag, smiled, then put it back, she was a doctor and someone they all knew at County General Hospital, if they'd been there up to the time of 1996.
She is Susan Lewis M.D, she was a former ER resident in Chicago's County General Hospital.
"I faced so many questions, you know. 'Why I left? you has so many opertunities working at that hospital, you had loads of friends and you loved Chicago where you lived most of your life.'
Well my answer is...
Once Chloe got custody of Susie again. I was purely heart broken you know and I felt that my whole world had broken down around me. I felt alone in the world even though I wasn't alone. I asked myself has Chloe really changed? I wanted to trust her for the sake of Susie.
I moved away to Pheonix to mostly be with Susie, I loved her like she was my own baby, even though she wasn't. She was my sister's and she didn't really know who the father was, that tell's you something about her doesn't it? And on the other hand I felt like a change, change of scenery out of the windy, wet, cold city of Chicago and into a warmer place, also a change of workplace (even though I got a job as a doctor in an ER).
You mention Mark Greene. Well me and Mark were great friends. I call him my best friend, and yes when I told him I loved him when I was leaving I did mean it, but I also regreated telling him then. I can only imagine how much he was hurting once I'd gone, he probably made everyone else's lives hell.
I also wish that he told me sooner how he felt, I did have a feeling that he liked me more, more than just friends by the way he acted, but I never challenged him about it. Probably we might have become an item if he'd told me how he felt sooner or if I'd stayed.
I dialed his phone number so many times but hung up before it rang. I planned things to tell him, things that he never heard. I began writing letters but never sent them and after a while I gave up. There was no point, I didn't know if he'd talk to me if I rang him or if he'd read my letter. If he'd just rip them up to shreds. Or if he would reply.
You ask about Pheonix, well...
I got a job in an ER in a County hospital, one smaller than in County General. I got the job of the Chief Resident, the job I turned down in Chicago. To tell the truth, I never felt quite at home in that hospital as I did in County. At County everyone knew each other and made an effort to get to know each other. We had work parties at Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thankgiving, and Birthday's. In Pheonix they didn't do nothing like that. The Chief Of Emergency Medicine was worse than Weaver (I heard that Weaver's in charge), he was a real miserable old git, Dr. Sanchez his name was. Don't get me wrong , the hospital was a nice place, but I have missed County.
My home...
The house was beautiful, huge rooms, and a lovely back yard. Lushious flowers, trees that made lotsof shade from the sunshine and greenery great for sunbathing in and it had loads of room for Susie to play. We also had a beautiful patio for the sun loungers and table and chairs along with a concervatory that we sat inside in the evening. Watching Susie grow up into a little girl has been the best thing. Seeing her learn to speak and do things for herself. I'll miss her and she'll probably miss her Aunty Susan too.
One thing which I didn't like as much in Pheonix was the weather. It got so hot, almost unbareable and the air conditioning in the hospital was either too hot or too cold. I really did miss Chicago's rain storms and snow in the winter."
Just then the El train stopped. Susan sat up and grabbed her bag, and made for the entrance of the train. "Hey Carter." She said to Carter, he was the familiar face from earlier.
They walked to the entrance of the hospital together. Where Carter's pager went off. "Sorry, I've got to go. Welcome back Susan." He said leaving her alone.
She walked up the steps from the ambulance bay entrance alone, and pushed the doors open hard. At the rate the EMTs would push it.
"Welcome back!" They all chanted. As she entered.
"It was a great feeling being back."
"What possition am I you ask? Well you'll just have to wait and see."
