SUMMARY: Anna leaves for Philladelphia, but comes back later with a big surprise for Carter.
Anna Del Amico was going to miss County General. She was going to miss intimidating Doug Ross. She was going to miss all her great friends, including Carol Hathaway and Elizabeth Corday. She would miss all her little pedes patients. But most of all she would miss Chase Carter and his cousin John.
Anna said her good-byes to Chase already, however Anna wasn't sure if Chase understood. Chase's heroin addiction left him brain damaged. She knew John would keep him company and that would make Chase feel better. Anna made all her good-byes to her co-workers the last day she was at County. Everyone threw her a small party also.
Anna was about to leave when she realized she forgot to say good-bye to one person. "Has anyone seen Carter?"
"He's in the lounge." answered Carol.
Anna made her way into the lounge. She saw John Carter sitting there, writing up some charts. He looked up when she came in, but solemnly put his head back down. "You've come to say good-bye, haven't you?"
"Yes." Anna answered. "I'm about to leave."
"Okay, well good-bye." John had his back turned to Anna.
"John what is the matter?" Anna asked.
John didn't want to share his feelings with Anna. Now was not a good time, not right when she was about to leave. "Nothing's the matter."
Anna knew John better. "Is it about Max?"
John walked up to his locker. "No, it isn't about Max." He opened the locker and took off his lab coat. "I'm over that now."
"The what is it? Maybe there's something I can do before I leave." Anna put a hand on John's shoulder. He turned away and slammed his locker shut.
"Anna, I-just go."
Anna looked at Johnsympathetically. "Well, then before I go, because you really want me to, I want to say something." She held John's hand. "I'm really glad I met you. Not only are you a good doctor, you were an even better friend. I won't forget our friendship. Good luck in your career." Anna hugged John. "Good-bye." Anna turned to leave the lounge.
"Anna I love you!" John said. He wasn't going to let her get away so easily.
Anna turned around. "Excuse me?"
"I love you. Anna, I've loved you since the day I met you. Please don't go."
Anna was speechless. "John, I don't know what to say."
"Just say that you'll stay. Stay here at County with us." John begged her.
Anna was flattered by John's eager kindness, however she knew she had to refuse his offer to stay. "I can't. I'm sorry. All the arrangements have been made. I really have to go. I think it will be better for me."
John was heartbroken. The woman he loved was about to leave forever. "Fine," John said, "Go back to Philadelphia, get back together with Max."
"Don't' start that." Anna said. "I said I never gave him an answer!"
John ran his fingers through his hair. "You're right, I'm sorry."
"Hey, although this is my last day here at County, my last night in Chicago is about to begin. Do you want to get some drinks? One more good time before I leave?" Anna asked.
John could live with that. "I'd love to. That would be great." John grabbed his coat, and Anna and John left for the night.
"I think now it's time for me to say good-bye." John said. He was slightly drunk, so was Anna.
"Okay then. Let's see if your good-bye is better than mine." Anna swallowed some more beer.
"Anna you are the greatest doctor I've ever met. You're a hard-worker; you don't let anyone push ya around. Anna you're the sweetest girl, and the PRETTIEST!" John slammed his beer bottle on the bar counter. "I hate to say good-bye to ya."
"John that's really sweet. Sweet like sugar!" She held up a sugar packet and giggled.
"Anna, if I wasn't married, I'd kiss you now." John ordered another beer. However Anna had to drive, so she ordered coffee and began to sober up.
"John you're not married."
"Yesss I am! I'm married to that nice nurse with the curly hair!" John smiled. "Your best friend who got da money from my Gamma. I sure do love my Gamma." John explained.
John nodded. Anna laughed. John was really drunk. "Carol is going out with Doug Ross. You're not married. I think it's time we stop with the beers."
"My Gamma has lots o' money, yes she does." John said. Anna pulled the beer away from him.
"John you look like hell. Why don't you sleep it off at my place? Come on." Anna led him out to her car.
"I bet Mr. Toilet would like a visit from me first. That beer went right through me." John looked Anna deeply in the eye. "Nature calls."
"Oh jeez, thanks for sharing your personal needs with me John." Anna rolled her eyes.
"Anytime sweetheart, anytime!" John walked uneasily towards the men's room.
The next morning John woke up with a bad headache. He realized that he was waking up in someone else's bed. He was dressed only in his boxers. How did I get here, he asked himself. John couldn't remember anything that had happened last night. Then he saw the roach crawl across the floor. He knew where he was.
"Anna?" he called.
"In the kitchen!" Anna was making breakfast, which consisted of arranging doughnuts on a plate.
John walked out of Anna's room, wearing the shirt and pants he was wearing the night before. "How come I'm in your apartment?"
Anna smiled. "We went out for drinks last night."
"Oh yeah, I guess I got pretty wasted."
"I'll say!" Anna said, still smiling. "At one point you claimed you were married to Carol Hathaway!"
"What?" John asked. "I don't remember that! I don't even remember what happened after the first few beers."
"Well you did say it. After you made a quick stop at the men's room before we left, you passed out in my car. It sure as hell wasn't easy dragging a 6'2" man up to my apartment. I undressed you down to your boxers so at least you'd be comfortable and let you sleep. I took the couch for the night. And now we are having this conversation about what happened last night."
"I didn't mean to be so much trouble. I'm sorry." John said.
"That's okay." Anna said. "Maybe drinking was your way of coping with my leaving today."
John sighed. "Damn, I forgot about that."
"Don't think about that now. Just relax and have some breakfast." Anna said as she handed him a doughnut.
Very little was said during breakfast. Anna wanted to talk to John about his feelings for her, but she knew he wouldn't cooperate. Anna decided that their last minutes with each other should be peaceful.
After breakfast, John cleaned himself up and was ready to leave. Anna walked him to the door.
"I guess this is it." Anna said.
"Yes, this is it." John held Anna's hands. "You're a great girl Anna. It will be hard to forget a person like you. Good-bye." Anna suddenly felt tears in her eyes. John wiped a tear from her face. "Don't cry." he said softly.
"I can't believe this is the last time I'll ever see you." Anna said. "It's so hard to say good-bye."
John wrapped Anna in his arms. They held each other for a long time. John gave Anna a soft kiss on her forehead, then moved down to her lips. Anna kissed back, but then pulled away. "John, please. Please don't make this any harder than it already is."
John moved the hair away from Anna's face. "Shhhhh. Just let this moment last a little longer."
Anna knew John was dragging out his time with her. But Anna decided to make the most of it. She kissed John again, holding him close. She ran her hands around his neck and began to loosen his tie. John pulled Anna into her room while struggling to unbutton her shirt. The two of them undressed. Anna lay on the bed, John gazing longingly at her body. "I love you Anna."
"I love you." Anna said. John lay on top of Anna. They succumbed to passion and expressed their love.
An hour later John woke up. He got dressed and figured Anna was in another room of her apartment. However, John soon realized he was alone. All the boxes with Anna's belongings were gone. The only things left were some living room furniture, the few sheets left on the bed and a note from Anna. He picked it up and it said:
John Truman Carter The Third:
The time came for me to leave, and I left.
I didn't want to disturb you as I left, you looked
so sweet when you were sleeping. Like a baby.
The key is on the counter. Please lock the
door when you leave. Put the key in the landlord's
John folded the note up and put it in his pocket. He sighed as he thought of the memories with Anna. The apartment reminded him too much of her. As he locked the door, he said to himself, "Good-bye Anna Del Amico." John put the key in the landlord's mailbox, and left the building.

"It will be easier to pay the rent, if you move in with me." Max Rosher begged. He was trying to persuade Anna into living with him. They had just gotten off their plane and were looking in the ads to find an apartment to rent right away.
Anna was not concerned. "There are over 100,000 apartments for rent in Philadelphia. I do not need someone to pay the rent with. I can handle living on my own, thank you very much."
Max was angry. "Anna what's wrong with you? Ever since we came to Philadelphia you've been pissing and moaning about something. I'd like to know what it is."
"My personal issues are not your business."
"How are we going to get back together if you're not honest with me?" Max asked.
Anna was furious. "I never gave you an answer before, but I can tell you what it is now. And it's no. I don't want to get back together with someone who's awfully demanding."
"Anna, what is the matter with you?"
"Max, I'm sorry. I think I need to be on my own now. I'm going to stay at my parent's house until I find a place of my own."
Anna picked up her bags and hailed a taxi. She got in, but didn't say good-bye to Max.
Anna told the cabbie her parent's home address. She realized coming back to Philadelphia wasn't one of her best ideas. But staying here might be the only thing best for her.
Anna's parents, David and Victoria Del Amico, both grew up in Philadelphia. David was a postal worker, while Victoria stayed home with her eight kids. They began their large family shortly after they married. Anna was their first child and only girl. Seven boys soon followed after. But now Victoria's children were all grown up. They were living on their own. However much to Victoria's disappointment, none were producing any grandchildren for her.
Anna's taxi pulled up to the house she grew up in. She paid the cabbie and walked to ring the doorbell, but Victoria answered before she had a chance.
"Mom, how'd you know I'd be coming?" Anna asked giving her mom a hug.
Victoria laughed. "When you have eight kids, you know at least one will come back for money, food, laundry etcetera."
Anna smiled at her mom's comment. "Don't you want to know why I'm really here?"
"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Victoria took her daughter's belongings inside. She made Anna some tea and they sat on the living room couch to talk.
"Anna, I knew that you were coming back to Philly to go back to CHOP, but why?"
Anna explained how she was going to get back together with Max, but rejected his offer at the last minute. All the explaining was done for that. "I never told you about John Carter, did I?" she asked her mom.
"No, who is that?"
Anna went on to tell the story of how she met him. She explained their friendship and how much it meant to her. "I really liked John. But I didn't want to let myself go for him because in the back of my mind I knew CHOP and Max would still be there for me. I'm not sure if I made the right decision of coming back here."
"Why do you think that?" Victoria asked.
"Did I come here to get back with Max and have life as it used to be? Or did I leave because I wanted to get away from John and that was the best for us? I honestly don't know if I made a mistake, or did the right thing." Anna said.
"Anna," Victoria said. "What you need to do first is think of what you want. Then decide if it's right for you. Things don't always go as planned."
"You're right. Can I stay here until I figure things out?" Anna asked.
"Of course. Your father will be glad to see you." Victoria said.
Over the past few days Anna enjoyed visiting her friends and family. She was having a great time, and that kept her from thinking about John Carter and the whole idea of moving back to Philadelphia. But Anna wondered what John was up to back at County General.
"Dr. Carter? My name is Lucy Knight. I'm going to be your med student." said Lucy. She was in her early twenties, with blond hair, blue eyes, and the dream of becoming a doctor.
John Carter on the other hand was sick of med students. He didn't want more med students due to his previous disasters with George Henry and Ivan Fu. "Lucy, you are here to study emergency medicine right?" John asked.
"Well. yeah." Lucy answered.
"Do you faint or vomit at the sight of blood or a grotesque wound?"
"No, it doesn't really bother me."
John was pleased. "I think you'll like it here Lucy. Let's get started on your first lesson."
She's not so bad, John thought, not bad at all. However John's thoughts changed after Lucy made her first mistake. "Dammit Lucy!" John scolded. "The needle goes in the vein! Not the artery! There's blood all over the floor."
Lucy was upset. "I-I thought I had it."
"Well you didn't. Jesus, Anna would never make a mistake like that."
"Who's Anna?" asked Lucy.
"Never mind that. Clean up this mess and call a nurse to put in that IV." John left the exam room. Lucy was mad.
Later Lucy was having lunch in the cafeteria with Kerry Weaver.
"So how do you like Dr. Carter?" asked Kerry.
"He seems nice. So far he has been a great teacher, but he has a short temper." Lucy answered.
"John? With a temper?"
"Yeah, I guess," Lucy said. "I made a mistake trying to put an IV in, he got upset, and complained that someone named Anna would never do what I did. Then he left the room."
Kerry sat back in her chair. "Anna, or Dr. Del Amico, was an intern here recently. Everyone knew John liked her. She left with some guy she was going to get back together with to Philadelphia. John is just heartbroken. Give him some time to get over it and he should be back to his normal self."
"Okay. Thanks for telling me."
Carter and Lucy were doing sutures on a man who had lacerations on both arms. Things were calm and quiet.
"Lucy, I'm sorry I got so upset earlier today. I shouldn't have given you such a hard time on your first day. Forgive me?" John asked, smiling. Lucy liked his boyish smile. "I forgive you. However you should remember that I am a student. I have room for mistakes."
John nodded. He cut some string he was holding. Lucy was curious as to John's side of the story about Anna. "Who's Anna, John?"
"She was an intern here." He explained. "Went back to Philadelphia with some guy named Max. Great doctor, hell of a girl."
"Not much of a romantic relationship, in case you're wondering." John said, with a far away look on his face like he was reminiscing about a long lost memory. Lucy on the other hand, had been wondering about their relationship.
"We got together one night before she left." He continued. "And that was the last time I saw her."
"Anything I can do?" asked Lucy as she finished her sutures.
"No, but thanks for asking. Hey, you did a fine job on those stitches. Great work." John smiled.
Lucy smiled back. She definitely liked John Carter. In a romantic way, in case you're wondering.
Telling Lucy about Anna made John wonder what she was up to. Whether she was with Max, or how she was doing back at CHOP.
Anna had been in Philadelphia for three weeks. She liked staying with her parents. Thing had been going well at CHOP also. However she knew she had to make a decision about what she wanted. Now Anna was more than ready to make that decision.
"Anna," Victoria said. "How goes the decision making process?"
"You must really want me out of the house." Anna said.
"I'm just curious."
"Well," said Anna. "I have decided what I want to do. There are some personal things that have helped me figure out what I want. I feel comfortable telling you, but I'm afraid what Daddy will think."
"Why are you afraid of what I'll think?" David Del Amico just stepped into the room. He had just gotten home from work. He still had his mailman uniform on.
"Because of you values." Anna said.
"Values on what?"
Anna took a deep breath. "Your value of marriage, and your value of children being born to married parents."
"Anna, what are you saying?" Victoria asked.
"I'm pregnant with John Carter's baby." Anna said. "I knew you'd be mad since John and I aren't married. Or even in a relationship for that matter."
"Anna I'm not mad." said Victoria.
"I am." David said. "So what you're saying, is that this was a one night stand? That you're carrying my bastard grandchild?"
"I expected more from you Anna. This is a really immature thing to do."
Anna continued to talk. "It isn't like that! At least I plan on taking responsibility for my actions! I only wanted you to back me up, that's all." Anna began to cry. David realized he hurt his daughter. He hugged her.
"Anna, I'm sorry. I just wasn't expecting this. As long as I know you'll be okay, I'm happy."
"Of course she'll be okay!" Victoria said. "She's our Anna! I'm happy I'm going to have at least one grandchild!"
Anna breathed a sigh of relief. It was easier than she thought to break the news to her parents. But Anna wasn't sure how easy it would be to break the news to John.

"Anna, you've told us that you're pregnant, but you haven't told us where you plan to live and raise this child." Victoria said.
Anna uneasily got up from the living room couch and walked to the kitchen. She was about to give birth at anytime. Anna was also annoyed at her mother's question. They kept asking her what she was going to do, but she still didn't have an answer yet.
"Mom, you keep asking me the same thing and I will continue to tell you the same thing, I don't know yet." Anna was pouring herself a glass of juice.
"Well, don't you think you should figure it out soon? I mean, that child isn't going to wait until you decide what you want to do." said Victoria.
"All I know right now is that the baby will be born here." Anna said.
"I need some time."
"Time is running out."
"Time's up." Anna said, holding her large belly. "My water just broke."
"Let's get you to the hospital." Victoria said. She grabbed Anna's overnight bag and drove her to CHOP. Anna was surprised how calm her mother was, but she expected that since she had given birth so many times.
"Push Anna! One more time!" said Dr. Bennett. She was CHOP's attending OB doctor, and a friend of Anna's.
Anna pushed; wishing that John were there to see the birth of his child. She continued to push until she heard a soft cry.
"Congratulations Anna!" Dr. Bennett announced. "You have a healthy baby girl." She handed the baby to Anna. Anna cried tears of joy. "Hello, sweetheart!" Anna said. "I can't believe you're really here!"
David rushed to the hospital to see Anna. He had been at work when he got the call from Victoria saying Anna was in labor.
"How's my Anna doing?" he asked Victoria.
"Mother and daughter Sophie Alexandra are doing fine!" Victoria happily announced. She was happy that she finally had one granddaughter.
David and Victoria went to visit Anna. From seeing her parents support her together, she realized that her daughter should have two parents supporting her. Anna knew that her daughter needed a father. "Mom, Dad, I have another thing to tell you."
"If you are pregnant again-" David said.
Anna laughed. "No, it's not anything like that. When Sophie gets a little older I want to move back to Chicago. She needs a father. I see you two standing here giving me all your support and that's what Sophie needs. A family, someone to support her."
David and Victoria stood there, proud of their daughter. "If you ever need anything, we'll be there for you right away." said Victoria. "And if little Sophie Del Amico needs anything too."
"Carter." Anna said firmly. "Her name is Sophie Carter."
Meanwhile back in Chicago, things were getting pretty hot between John Carter and Lucy Knight.
"We shouldn't be doing this." John said as Lucy kissed him again.
"Well it's better than stitching up your forehead." Lucy had been trying out the new Tae-Bo workout, and in the process knocked John over, cutting his forehead open.
"But I could get in trouble." John said.
"And yet you continue to kiss me!"
John chuckled and moved in for another kiss. Lucy passionately kissed him back. The two of them were nearly on the floor when Chuni walked in.
"Carter, your patient in-oh excuse me Dr. Carter! I didn't know you were busy!" Chuni walked out giggling. She couldn't wait to tell everyone what she just saw.
John's face turned red. He excused himself from Lucy and went to hide in the lounge.
By the end of the day everyone knew what John and Lucy had done. Lucy was ready to leave for the day when she bumped into John in the lounge.
"Heading out?" asked John, opening his locker.
"Yeah, good night Dr. Carter." Lucy said.
"Lucy wait," John said. "I hope I didn't embarrass you today, when we...you know."
"You didn't. I just hope I didn't get you in trouble."
"Oh no, don't worry about it. Are we cool?" asked John.
"We are cool. Bye." Lucy left the lounge. She was beginning to feel strong romantic feelings for John. Lucy hoped that things would get more serious between them.
"I can't believe you're leaving already!" said Victoria. "Promise me that you will send plenty of pictures of Sophie and tell me about everything she's doing. Including losing her first tooth, first day of school, and don't forget to send video of her first steps!"
"Mother! Sophie is only four months old! It will be a long time before any of that." Anna said. "But I will keep in touch."
David was holding his granddaughter. "Take care of yourself Anna. We'll be here if you need anything." David handed Sophie to Anna.
"I'll be okay. Thanks for everything. Good-bye." Anna got on her plane to Chicago. She sat down with Sophie in her lap.
Sophie began to softly cry. "Don't cry Sophie," Anna said comforting her. "You'll get to see your father soon. You're going to have a family."
End of Chapter Three
By: Carrie Verkman
Anna was lucky enough to find an apartment big enough for her and Sophie. It was also close to County. Anna decided to see if she could get her job back there.
"Dr. Anspaugh's office." A secretary announced.
"Can I speak to him. This is Dr. Anna Del Amico." answered Anna.
Anna waited to talk to Anspaugh. She hoped that he would get her job back.
"This is Donald Anspaugh." he said.
"Dr. Anspaugh, this is Anna Del Amico."
"Anna, I'm surprised to hear from you! How are things in Philadelphia?"
"Actually I am not in Philadelphia. I just moved back to Chicago."
"I see," said Dr. Anspaugh. "Well I suppose you're calling me to get your job back."
"Yes I am. But if you don't need me I can find a job at Mercy Hospital or Southside. I can find another job to support my daughter."
"I had a baby in Philadelphia. A little girl."
"Congratulations Anna. I didn't know you were pregnant."
"Thank you. I didn't know either until after I left Chicago."
"May I ask why?"
"John Carter is the father. He got me pregnant before I left." Anna explained. Great, now he'll never give me my job back now, she thought.
"Oh, well I didn't know that you two were involved in a relationship."
"To tell you the truth we weren't."
Donald Anspaugh wasn't very impressed by her behavior. But he knew Anna had shaped up and had a daughter to support. "Anna you can have your job back. However you must restart your internship. You can't pick up where you left off. I feel it's necessary for you to work since you have someone to care for now. I expect you in my office at 8:00 sharp to go over your papers and then you can work that day. Sound like a plan?"
Anna was relived. "Yes, I'll be there. But I can I bring my daughter to daycare first?"
"Of course, good-bye Anna."
"Thank you, good-bye." Anna was so happy to have her job back.
The next day Anna walked through the ambulance bay with Sophie. She wasn't afraid of what people would think. She was just glad to be back at County and see all her old friends.
Carol was the first to see her. "Anna? What are you doing here?"
"I got my job back here. Things didn't work out in Philadelphia." Anna explained.
"Who's this?" asked Carol. She tickled Sophie.
"My daughter Sophie."
"I'll explain later Carol. I have to meet with Anspaugh now." Anna left. She walked through the ER. The nurses greeted her back warmly and ooh'ed and ahh'ed over Sophie. Mark Greene saw her too. "Anna good to see you. Anspaugh told me you'd be back."
"Well I didn't expect you to be coming back with someone else." Mark said.
"This is Sophie. My daughter."
Mark had a look of shock on his face. "Wow. Congratulations."
"Thanks." Anna walked into an elevator and headed up to Dr. Anspaugh's office.
Later that day Anna explained to Carol what happened with her and Carter before she left. "We decide to get some drinks.
Carter was pretty drunk so he slept it off at my apartment. The next morning as we said good-bye, we started kissing. Next thing I knew I was in bed with him."
"Wow! Then what happened?" asked Carol.
"I found out I was pregnant while staying with my parents. Nine months later I gave birth to Sophie. We moved back to Chicago so she can see her father. It's what's best for her." Anna said.
"I'm happy for you Anna. Doug and I have been trying to have children. Maybe we should get drunk off our asses and see what happens."
Anna laughed. "You and Doug are still together?"
Carol smiled and told her story. The two of them gossiped for the rest of the morning.
Anna told all the doctors that she had a daughter. Kerry Weaver even spent some time with Sophie in daycare (since she was a bit cranky) so Anna could get work done. Everyone knew except John Carter. At the end of the day, Anna picked up Sophie from daycare. Kerry was still there.
"How is she?" asked Anna.
"Just wonderful. You are so lucky Anna. I bet Carter is happy too." Kerry said.
"I'm sure he will be when I tell him." Anna said putting Sophie's little coat on.
"You haven't told him?"
"I was planning to tell him today."
"Well Carter was with Chase today." Kerry said.
"So I heard. I want to tell him in person. And I want him to actually see his daughter." Anna said. Kerry couldn't argue with that.
The next day Anna came into work early. Elizabeth Corday saw her with Sophie. "Oh Anna, she is getting so big. Little Sophie looks just like her father."
Thank you. Sophie loves all the attention." Anna said.
"How come you're at work so early?" asked Elizabeth.
"I have some unfinished business to take care of." Anna said.
Anna went to find Carter. He was in Exam 2. Anna walked by the door. She looked through the window and saw him talking to Lucy. Anna smiled. She was so happy to see him. Lucy suddenly walked out. "Oh excuse me ma'am. Cute baby." She said as she walked out.
Anna walked in. "Hi John."
John knew the voice right away. He turned around. "Anna?"
"I'm back." She said.
John was speechless. "I can't believe...why are you...whose baby is that?"
Anna knew he'd be like this. "Relax. I have good news for you. I had a baby girl in Philadelphia. Her name is Sophie."
"Wow. That's so great to hear. I'm, uh, very happy for you and, um, Max."
John thought that Anna and Max were still together.
"I'm not back together with Max. This isn't his child." Anna said.
"Oh, okay." John was afraid that Anna had married someone else.
"John, Sophie is your daughter." Anna said.
John didn't say anything. He fainted.
End of Chapter Four
By: Carrie Verkman
"John? John wake up. John, it's Anna." Anna shook him to wake him up. John opened his eyes. He saw Anna and his daughter. John stood up.
"Remember the morning at my apartment?" Anna asked.
"How could I forget?" John said.
"Things got carried away, we didn't use protection." Anna said.
John ran his fingers through his hair. He let out a big sigh. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know until I got to Philadelphia."
"But still, why didn't you tell me?"
Anna didn't really have an answer for John. "I wanted to wait and see how things went."
John was still shaken up by the fact that he was a father. "I need some time."
Anna was confused. "Time for what?"
"To figure all this out. It's not everyday that the woman you love comes back to you with your child." John left the exam room they were in. Anna chased after John. "John wait!" But John ignored her.
The next day Lucy came to work excited to see her latest crush. Teacher actually. Lucy's feelings for John began to grow. She looked forward to seeing him everyday. In fact Lucy thought he might have feelings for her. But today, John seemed different to Lucy. She noticed that he was distracted, and not really concentrating on his work. "Dr. Carter, are you okay?"
John was staring into space at the front desk. "What?"
"I said are you okay? You haven't been too well lately."
"There is a lot on my mind." John said, finally looking at her.
"Oh. Well I was wondering if I can give the woman in Curtain Three some Demerol." Lucy asked.
"Yeah, go ahead."
Lucy was surprised. "By myself?"
"I trust you. I have something to take care of now. If you need help, ask Mark or Kerry." John said. He got up, ready to leave.
"I don't think I can do it! Dr. Carter? Carter?!" Lucy called after him, but John was leaving the hospital.
Roland Carter waited anxiously at Doc Magoo's for his son. John wanted to talk about something, but Roland had no idea what it was. He was worried that it was something about Chase. John entered the small diner and took the seat across from his father in the booth, where he was seated.
"Thanks for coming Dad." John said.
"Not a problem. But you should have picked a place where they serve decent coffee." Roland said.
"I don't want to talk about the coffee, okay?"
"Fine. What do you want to talk about that is so important?" asked Roland.
"How did you feel after I was born?" asked John.
Roland chuckled. "My word! That was a long time ago! I don't know if I remember!"
"It's not funny, I'm serious." John said. "How did you feel after I was born?"
"Well, first of all I was relived that you came into the world okay." said Roland. "Then I kissed your mother. I still remember the look on her face when the doctor said, 'Congratulations! It's a boy!'. The doctor handed you to your mother. She was so happy, you know, she had two boys, a family." Roland sighed as he thought of his son Bobby. John listened attentively.
"We named you then. John Truman Carter the Third. I remember saying, 'Hello there, John. I'm your father.'. At that moment, you reached up for me. You wanted me to hold you. I picked you up from your mother's arms and held you. That was the first time you smiled at me. I knew then, that I was truly a father. And it was the greatest feeling of my life." Roland's eyes began to get misty. John felt like crying too.
John wiped his eyes. "I don't know what to say."
"That's okay. Why did you ask me that?" asked Roland. "Because I'm a father now." John explained how him and Anna conceived Sophie. "I couldn't believe the fact that I'm responsible for someone now. When Anna told me that Sophie was my daughter, I lost it. I didn't think I was ready. I didn't know how to feel."
"And you wanted to know how I felt, as an example?" asked Roland.
"Yes, and I appreciate it."
"Well, you won't know how you feel until you see your daughter." said Roland. "Be a man, John. Be a father." Roland paid for his coffee and left.
John sat there. "Be a father." He said to himself. John walked back to County.
Meanwhile at the hospital Lucy need help with an IV tube. Anna noticed she was struggling. "Need some help?"
"Please. You're Anna Del Amico, right?" Lucy asked.
"Yep. Nice to meet you Lucy."
"I saw you the other day with a baby."
Anna figured that Lucy was John's med student. "That was me with mine and Carter's daughter."
Lucy was crushed. She figured out what was going on. This was the Anna Carter still loved. They even had a baby together. The baby was the reason why John was so distracted. Anna spoke up, interrupting Lucy's thoughts. "Hey, Luce, are you paying attention here?"
"Yeah." she answered.
John came back to the hospital. He saw Lucy. "Hey Lucy, have you seen Anna?"
Lucy groaned. She was mad since she figured out that Carter wasn't interested in her. He still loved Anna. "She's in the lounge." John entered the lounge. He saw Anna trying to feed Sophie some rice cereal.
"Come on, Sophie you need to eat." Anna was frustrated.
"Let me try." John took the spoon from Anna. "Open wide for the airplane! It's coming in for the landing! Oh no! Look out!" John ate the spoonful of cereal, but spit it out. "Yuck! It's no wonder she's not eating this."
Sophie giggled. John tried to feed her again. This time Sophie ate a spoonful.
"Thanks." said Anna.
"No problem." John said. "Anna I'm sorry for ignoring you and Sophie. I realize now that I have a daughter. Someone to care for. I just didn't know how to feel."
Anna finished feeding Sophie. "I accept your apology. Are you ready to be a father now?"
"Yes, I think so." John said. Suddenly Sophie reached out for John to hold her.
"She wants her daddy." Anna said, handing Sophie to him. John held his daughter. She cooed with delight. Sophie smiled at him. John couldn't believe his eyes. Sophie was doing what John did to his father after he was born. Anna looked on proudly.
"So this is your daughter." John said.
"This is our daughter." Anna corrected him. She leaned over and kissed John. "Our family."

"So let's see," said John. "I've called the caterer, the florist and the church. What about you?"
"I did my share." Anna said. "All we have to do is wait and see whether the guests are coming or not. Who says planning a wedding is hard?"
John laughed. He was in the lounge with Anna deciding their final wedding arrangements. It had been about a month since John asked Anna to marry him. Anna immediately said yes. It was also the best thing for Sophie to have married parents. John was happy to have Anna back.
"Well, Mark is coming along with Elizabeth, Doug and Carol, Peter, Jeanie, and Kerry." John said.
"What about Lucy?" asked Anna.
"I don't know. She hasn't told me yet. I'll go ask her now, she's practicing IV's in the suture room." John headed to the suture room.
He saw Lucy busily working on a fake arm trying to insert needles. She didn't look up when John came in.
"Lucy, can I talk to you?" asked John.
"Are you going to come to my wedding?"
"I don't know yet." Lucy answered.
"Well I hope you can come. I really want you to be there."
Lucy sighed. "No, you don't." she said quietly under her breath.
John turned around. "What did you say?"
"You don't want me to come."
John was surprised. "Lucy, just because I don't like you in a romantic way doesn't mean I don't want to be your friend."
"You knew I liked you?" asked Lucy.
"I knew." said John. "Chuni told me. But I do like you. As a friend. So does Anna. But you'll have to accept that I'm with her now. We really want you to come Lucy. It's the only time you'll get to see me in a tuxedo, and I know you'd like that."
John laughed, he was flattered that Lucy liked him. She may always have a crush on him, but for now he wanted to have some fun with it.
"I will come." Lucy said laughing. "Thanks for talking to me. I feel better now."
John left the suture room satisfied. He went back to the lounge to find Anna. Anna had picked Sophie up from daycare already and was ready to leave. John kissed Anna and picked up his daughter.
"All set?" asked Anna. "Is everything to all right?"
John thought for a moment. He had settled things with Lucy, he was getting married to Anna, the love of his life, and he had an adorable baby girl.
"Yeah." John said. "Everything is all right."
