SUMMARY: Carter tries to move on. Will it work?

~*~

Carter had just woken up. He threw his hand to his left, and noticed Charlotte wasn't there. Regardless of what people said, or even thought, they hadn't slept together. Then he laughed. They had slept together, meaning, shared the same bed, but hadn't done 'the deed.' She was still a virgin, something he respected fully. She was easy to talk to, and be around. He heard the shower turn on, and he walked to his bathroom. He threw off his robe and walked in. As soon as he started to suck on her neck, she turned around, and threw the sponge at him. She smiled, and leapt out of the tub.

~*~

Charlotte got out of the tub. She didn't feel comfortable with him. She knew his whole heart wasn't with her. But hers was. She loved him. And if you love someone, you're supposed to make sure they're happy, right? She knew what she had to do. As she watched him walk out of the shower, she sometimes wished she had slept with him. He was gorgeous. Perfect body. Perfect features, from his brown hair, to his green eyes. But it wouldn't feel right. Like she would only be betraying herself. He started to kiss her again, but once again, she moved. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. She started the speech she had worked on all night. "Carter, I'm going to be late. I start at 6:30". It was a lie. "But we need to talk. You need to get away from lunch. I'll meet you at the cafe on Lake Shore Drive, same spot, at 12:00. And don't be late. This is important."

~*~

Carter heard the tone of her voice. It sounded unsure. He watched her dress and leave. He departed later on, and the whole time at work, wondered what they needed to talk about. He had ideas, but didn't want to presume anything. He had learned that a long time ago. It was a very hard lesson.

~*~

Finally, Charlotte had gotten herself together, and sat at the cafe overlooking Navy Pier and the lake. It was their spot. They had met here. Had their first date here. And now, it would loose all meaning. Only pain. She watched Carter come in and wave hi. He rushed over and kissed her on the cheek. They ordered mocha lattes, and she started when their drinks arrived. "Carter, what's happening between us is pulling me apart. I can't do this anymore. And you shouldn't either."

~*~

Carter was less than surprised. He had tried to move on after all that happened, but it was impossible. He loved only one person in his entire life. And he knew there was no turning back. He didn't want to hurt Charlotte, but he realized he already had.
"What are you talking about?"

~*~

Charlotte knew what she had to do. "John you don't love me. Your heart's in another place. With someone else. We, I, need to stop fooling myself. Promising myself that it will all work out. Today, I didn't go to work. I spent the day moving my stuff out of your apartment. If I left anything, toss it, or donate it to charity. I don't care. I need to move on. I can't live like this."

~*~

Carter knew everything would somehow come to this. But he never imagined it ending so quickly. So harshly. He loved Charlotte, but she was a better friend than anything else. He didn't want to hurt her feelings anymore than he already had. He tried to play dumb. Something he didn't do too well.
"Who are you talking about?"

~*~

Charlotte knew he was playing dumb. He had never really loved her. But she loved him with every breath in her body. She needed to move on. "I'm talking about her, John. This is your suitcase, and a plane ticked to Minnesota. This is your engagement ring. I had Gamma give it to me. The plane leaves at three 'o clock. Be there by one thirty. I talked to Kerry. Your schedule's worked out. Now, don't think that I don't love you. I did, do, and always will. But you don't love me." Charlotte got up and started to walk out the door. But before she did, she turned around. "I wish you and Abby all the best." She turned back around, and with that, she was gone.
